What's the deal with the green eyes? A spokesperson for DARPA told Gizmodo in an email, " ... it's just an indicator light to show the status of the vehicle. Green = it's on and in autonomy mode."

imo...

Green = Go

Yellow = Slow

Red = Stop

That aside, I am more concerned about other things.

For example...

From the cited article...

... The RACER Heavy Platform (RHP) vehicles are enormous, weighing in at 12 tons and measuring 20 feet long. The vehicles are programmed using the Textron M5 base system, already used in many driverless vehicles by the U.S. Army, and are meant to complement the RACER Fleet Vehicles (RFVs) which are comparatively small at just 2 tons and 11 feet long. ...

OK, Textron MX5?

M5
www.textronsystems.com

... Bringing together speed of innovation and proven program execution, the M5 is ready for the fight. M5 is the 5th generation of RIPSAW providing speed, mobility and unmanned capability. The M5 can silently maneuver and keep pace with the current and future maneuver forces, pushing capabilities beyond the human formation. ...

RIPSAW?

RIPSAW F4
www.howeandhowe.com

... Built for extreme off-road enthusiasts, the RIPSAW F4 has the power to take you where you want to go. The F4 is engineered as an all-terrain vehicle with high-speed mobility. Its heavy-duty rubber tracks allow the vehicle to tackle sharp slopes and loose terrains with ease. The RIPSAW F4 has 4-passenger carrying capacity so that you can share the excitement. Simply enter through the gull wing doors and buckle those seatbelts for the ride of your life! ...

At that point, I gave up.

I still do not understand that "glowing green eyes" thing.

Can someone explain?

thx.

It's because it looks cool, the army doesn't like to fund ugly things, and it's convenient to check the state at a glance during testing without having to access a device to check wirelessly.

Howe & Howe had a TV show about making the Ripsaw called Howe & Howe Tech back in 2010, which is a recreational tracked vehicle. They were bought and improved by a military contractor to provide a high speed, all terrain vehicle for military, commercial, and even recreational purposes. It's a rally race car of tracked vehicles.

Sarah Connor: Did you see this war?
Kyle Reese: No. I grew up after. In the ruins... starving... hiding from H-K's.
Sarah Connor: H-K's?
Kyle Reese: Hunter-Killers. Patrol machines built in automated factories. Most of us were rounded up, put in camps for orderly disposal.
