In 2020, when the United States Postal Service began an ambitious plan to modernize and consolidate services -- in the middle of the pandemic -- its slow service wound up disenfranchising tens of thousands of voters whose ballots never made it to their elections offices in time. Four years later -- by some measures -- USPS performance is now actually worse ...

The Trump donor whom Biden can't fire is running the U.S. Postal Service directly into the ground -- just what everyone warned about when he was confirmed during the pandemic (April 2024)

... It's just another sign of the unfavorable leadership of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, who was nominated by the Trump administration and confirmed by an all-Trump-appointed board. DeJoy was a major Republican Party donor and Trump fundraiser"and was also the first postmaster general in two decades without prior USPS experience.

Under DeJoy, the USPS has been bleeding money. In the first quarter of fiscal 2024 alone, USPS reported a $2.1 billion net loss, more than double its $1 billion net loss during the same time period last year. (A USPS spokesperson said its "financial condition has improved," pointing to a progress report that showed USPS' projected losses for the decade falling to $70 billion, from $160 billion previously, and saying the agency plans to break even by 2030.)

"Under DeJoy, USPS has not adequately been controlling labor costs, while quality of service has been going down and prices going up," said Robert D. Atkinson, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a think tank that specializes in productivity and innovation issues. "This is not sustainable, and the more prices go up the more volumes go down, until USPS hits a death spiral."

But DeJoy, who was previously under investigation by the FBI in connection with past political fundraising, says he has a 10-year plan to revive the postal service. He's been in his role since June 2020, and plans to serve his entire appointment. Plus, President Joe Biden doesn't have the power to remove him from his post, despite how badly the agency is struggling. ...

Why would PG DeJoy want to fix the Postal Service?

Trump's new postmaster general could corrupt a key institution ahead of Election Day (July 2020)

... DeJoy's previous work also poses potential financial conflicts of interests. DeJoy and his wife, a Trump appointee to the Commission on White House Fellowships who is his nominee to be the U.S. ambassador to Canada, own $30.1 million to $75.3 million in assets in Postal Service competitors or contractors, like UPS and the trucking company J.B. Hunt. Although DeJoy likely had to divest these conflicting assets, his ethics agreement and personal financial disclosure statement are not yet available on the Office of Government Ethics' website for the public to confirm.

Then there are the nonprofessional aspects of DeJoy's rsum. In 2017, DeJoy and his wife hosted Trump for a fundraiser in their home. When he was appointed, DeJoy was overseeing fundraising for the Republican National Convention, and he only recently resigned the post. Public records reveal that DeJoy donated more than $1.2 million to the Trump Victory Fund and millions more to the Republican Party. Although the Postal Service Board of Governors voted on the selection of DeJoy, the Trump administration, led by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, angled for the authority to pick the new postmaster general, raising additional concerns about politicization of the agency.

One obvious reason for the Trump administration's keen interest in the postmaster general position is Trump's vociferous criticism of voting by mail. Installing a loyalist like DeJoy is another way Trump could undermine the agency and suppress voting in 2020. ...
