Joker 2's ending was NOT a betrayal of the first film
Maybe it's not the punchline we deserve, but Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix danced through a messy delivery to land on a pretty killer joke.

Politics aside, it's been absolutely fascinating to watch reviewers who were triggered by this film. Some of the ones blubbering on YouTube are strong contenders for updated Triggered! memes that used to feature SJWs.
Thoughtful reviews like this one have been difficult to find in all the polarized chaff. The film is definitely flawed in its execution, pacing and editing, but it doesn't undo or "betray" anything from the first Joker film. At least, not for anyone who was paying attention.

One thing you can't accuse either Joker movie of is being mediocre, regardless how you feel about them.

The Joker 2. The two Jokers. Joker Deux.
There is a certain humor to it all. The Joker we see in the first movie is not the Joker we know from the comics or the other movies. This Joker is just sad pathetic Arthur Fleck. The REAL Joker turns out to be the psychotic inmate at Arkham Asylum who murders Arthur Fleck at the end of the movie, and subsequently transforms himself into the Joker we all know and love from other movies and comics. Poor pathetic Arthur Fleck is simply dead and forgotten. A lonely, lost psychotic criminal discarded in the trash to make way for OUR Joker of popular imagination and mythic grandiose evil. The joke ends up being on all of us.

YGWYFD. ;)
I saw hints of both Fight Club and American Beauty in this movie. The Joker movement appears to be very similar to Project Mayhem, and in both cases the extent of the main character's hallucinations are ambiguous, including his interactions with his love interest. And similar to American Beauty, the main character takes a step back before the, er, climax, realizing this isn't what he really wants, but it's too late for him because he's already crossed too many lines and has to pay the ultimate price for it.
