Peggy Noonan: It's hard to tell if Trump is announcing appointments or trolling his enemies with his second wave of nominees.

I've said it before I'll say it again, people are going to be SHOCKED at what our country is a year from now. The seeds are being planted in ripe ground and are beginning to grow.

Peggy is just another institutionalist.

Well, Peggy, the institutions failed us.

Politics failed us
The criminal justice system failed us
Elections failed us

With those 3 the failure was circular-Politicians pointing to the CJS, the CJS say nothing we can do, go vote harder, we vote harder and look what we get.

Every counter to him has bent to his will be it the courts or Congress
Or is in the process of bending to his will be it the media or the military

------- is unrestrained.

The transformation coming will be mind boggling.

This is Peggy's argument for what should be done:

"Unaligned Americans who don't even like Trump are tired of being browbeaten for not hating him enough." If voters have made a terrible mistake, "that's a risk of democracy, so we must live with it." Mr. Friedersdorf himself doubts Mr. Trump's character, judgment and respect for the Constitution. He fears recklessness in some areas and cruelty in others. What he urges toward Mr. Trump is in line with our past: "normal political opposition," which is "more likely to yield good civic results." "Our constitutional and civic checks on executive power are formidable, frustrating every administration."

"Until 2028, normal checks can constrain Trump."

These are wise words.

TH: This is blind stupid institutionalism. The ------- SC gave him complete and utter immunity. He can do literally anything, He can walk into a girls dressing room rape every child in there-not a crime. He is loading the DoJ to pursue his enemies. He WILL be going after his rivals with actual -------- criminal cases. Congress IS going to bow to him. The most vile nominees will be appointed.

I close with this. People say they fear authoritarianism from Mr. Trump, latent or overt fascism, a reign of intolerance. My fears are in the area of foreign policy. Mr. Trump no doubt believes he's ready for a major foreign crisis, but he's never had one. I mean not something like the pandemic, a crisis with foreign-affairs aspects that rolled out over a matter of months and years, but a sharp and immediate crisis, a big and crucial one. He tends to think foreign affairs comes down to personal relationships, but it doesn't. Xi Jinping, "Little Rocket Man""he had them all wary in his first term. Who is this guy? Better not push him. But now they know him"how he operates, what he wants.

He isn't a mystery to them anymore. He isn't a mystery to anyone. That will have some impact on things going forward.

TH: And Peggy bounces to the absurd. Peggy, your fears are misplaced. Your fears should be with the concentration camps and the violent suppression of protestors and the removal of basic rights here at home. Let Lil Kim take over S Korea, Let china take Taiwan, Let Israel genocide the Palestinians, Let Putin take Poland, they are no longer within our ability to care

It only takes one idiot to feed an ordinary internet troll. It takes a village of idiots to feed Trump.

Noonan's point is you're not going to defeat Trump by letting him troll you into expending all your energy chasing after everything he says and does. That's how he wears people down, and ultimately defeats them.

Just ---- off and go back to carving swastikas on park benches.

"Unaligned Americans who don't even like Trump are tired of being browbeaten for not hating him enough." If voters have made a terrible mistake, "that's a risk of democracy, so we must live with it."

I predict that if Trump follows through with his Project 2025 unaligned voters will come to hate him all on their own and no one will have to browbeat them into it.

These are wise words.

Are they though? Normal checks barely contained him last time, and he's had 4 years and the help of the Heritage Foundation, the Federalist Society and most importantly the SC to lay out plans so he will not be thwarted this time. Methnks Peggy and the guy she is quoting are suffering from a failure of imagination that will soon be dispelled.

There is truth in what you are saying. I don't think most people individually can expand all their "energy chaing after everything he says and does." I know I can't. 4 years is a long time. Most of us will need to pick our battles. But there are tens of millions of people who voted against Trump, so there will be plenty of people to cover all of the battles, including the ones I chose to sit out. Good advice from an article I linked to in another thread:

Under a Trump presidency, there are going to be so many issues that it will be hard to accept that we cannot do it all. I'm reminded of a colleague in Turkey who told me, "There's always something bad happening every day. If we had to react to every bad thing, we'd never have time to eat."

An elder once saw me trying to do everything and pulled me aside. "That's not a healthy lifelong strategy," she said. She'd been raised in Germany by the generation of Holocaust survivors who told her, "Never again." She took it personally, as if she had to stop every wrong. It wracked her and contributed to several serious ongoing medical conditions. We can accept our humanity or suffer that lack of acceptance.

PS I for one don't think the resistance is faiding. I think it is resting, regrouping, waiting to see what Trump actually does in terms of policy. Or to put it in a way that Trump and MAGA voters will understand, the resistance is standing back and standing by.

Latest popular vote count:

Trump
76,453,640

Harris
73,755,129

That is not a massive electoral mandate, and acting as if it is will likely spell big trouble for Republicans in in the coming months.

Jfc tuning out will achieve nothing and is exactly what ------- wants

People need to prepare for what he is unleashing.

People need to pay attention and unite in opposition.

Look at who ------- is appointing and KNOW this is what ------- wants and what he will be pushing for.

MASSIVE attack against immigrants
A DoJ going after his critics. Let's just hope that he doesn't get around to people on the DR criticizing him-remember no slight is too small for a dictator to take offense by

It is still a little unclear where things will go with abortion (though his pick for Solicitor General is not a good sign)
It is yet to be seen what the business community's response will be, they seem to be, at best, taking a wait and see approach and at worst are bending the knee to join his corrupt oligarchy rule

The things people think will protect them WON'T

The administrative state will be decimated-people in the DoJ and the various agencies who would restrain him will either be purged or cowered into compliance look at who he is appointing-strict loyalists to HIM and HIM alone
The courts WILL NOT STOP HIM-he is gearing up for a conflict with the SC, likely over birth right citizenship and naturalization-things he WILL be targeting
The Senate is failing it's first test-the republican leadership is already vacillating on what should be clear-they should be saying WE WILL HOLD MEETINGS TO ADVISE AND CONSENT ON ALL OF HIS APPOINTMENTS, they should be rejecting out of hand the likes of Hegseth, Gabbard and Gaetz-what you are hearing is they will allow recess appointments if dems raise issues. That is all but admitting they will bow to --------even as odious a person as Gaetz will likely get through
And the House is not going to deny ------- ANYTHING=McCarthy is an empty suit WAY over his head and if you are thinking we can rely on the razor thin margin to grab a few republicans to stop the worst of the legislation, think again. It is actually better for Congress to be wholly republican-they will at least try to focus on tax cuts for the billionaires and less on the most odious policies. If they don't pass -------'s worst, he will simply ignore them and executive order his way to the worst

He will start with deportation-with the attendant uproar blinding people to the other nasty ---- he will be pulling. And he will start the deportation with the worst of the worst to trigger a reaction, a protest. the protests will be framed as whacko libs defending criminals (people who would be deported anyway) and that will be used to justify crackdowns on protests and the beginning of the massive sweeps and deportations

Keep an eye out for the Haitians in Springfield, that will be a test case. -------'s demonization of them and he and Vance's outright statements that they think they are here illegally will compel ------- to take action against them. They are in a red state with a red governor who has but weakly stood up to ------- so far. Here there will be an obvious political tension-strict deportation vs -------'s lies, vs states' rights vs corporate need (the Haitians went their cause businesses needed labor) vs the legality of the Haitians presence.

That will likely be where ------- tests the courts

So, ummm, yeaf, f off with this chill out vibe, you want your country? Fight for it.

Yes, we can unite in opposition, but many people will not see what their vote has gotten them until it hits home. So now we have Muslims realizing the mistake they made. When an undocumented family member gets deported, Latinos who voted for Trump may wise up. When Trump bans the morning after pill, women who thought he wouldn't do anything more on abortion, will see what their vote has brought them. When he gets rid of the Dept of Education and the ACA without a workable replacement, more people will understand the miscalculation they made and so on and so on. In that way, I welcome the Republican overreach that is about to happen. They are reading the election results as meaning that their policies across the board are are what the American people want. I don't think that is the case, but we'll find out.

Does this sound like a mandate to you? It doesn't sound like a mandate to me:

New @CookPolitical: Trump has fallen below 50% of the popular vote. With 152.7M votes counted, he leads Harris 49.99%-48.22%

Mandate, shmandate. All the GOP cares about is power. They disregard every political norm to achieve it. And then they suppress the vote to keep it.
