This is not a scene from a Hollywood blockbuster but the real-life achievement of German skydiver Max Manow, who has redefined the boundaries of human flight with an unprecedented feat.

In a jaw-dropping display of skill and audacity, Max Manow from the Red Bull Skydive Team has pulled off the world's first mid-air plane hook manoeuvre! @#1 ... extreme sports ...

Where is the "sport" aspect?

The only "extreme" thing I see is daring.

Is daring a sport?

Was Red Bull involved?

Never mind.

It's not sports, it's advertising.

@#5 ... It's not sports, it's advertising. ...

Looks that way.

That's why I left the original URL intact, instead of looking for another site that echo'd the story.

Sport or not, aside.

That dude was crazy in what he accomplished.

Now, my question becomes, how many people will die in their attempt to beat this accomplishment?

So was Felix Baumgartner.

Skydiving is a sport - or it can be. There are some incredible competitions in it. I used to watch the formation practice not too far from where I live. It was best from the ground, but I used to enjoy hitching a ride on the DC3 to watch from the plane. I never did anything but single jumps.

Here's a link to the USPA's manual on competition: www.uspa.org
There's a section just for Wingsuit competition.

This vid and effort reminded me of some other projects - one was Army I think - where they'd fly the plane low and catch the skydiver on a rig and lift him up where he could release over target. There was also something in WW2 - about ground to air recovery? Hm.

But was this, I'll say, a stunt, not a sporting event.

More like a dare-devil event designed to attract attention.

Evel Knievel comes to mind.

Evel Knievel
en.wikipedia.org

... Robert Craig Knievel (October 17, 1938 " November 30, 2007), known professionally as Evel Knievel, was an American stunt performer and entertainer. Throughout his career, he attempted more than 75 ramp-to-ramp motorcycle jumps. Knievel was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999.[1] ...

Whoa, "entertainer."

I had not ascribed that appellation to this event.

But yeah, it seems to be more apropos.

I look at this as testing new technology and ideas. Things like this cost money, lots of money, and sponsorship like Red Bull does, expands the sport. Will this turn into something? Who knows. Will something be spawned from this? I'd bet so.

If you want unbiased from me, though, it won't happen. I was an adrenaline junky for decades. I've finally mellowed. To be honest I have no idea how I am still alive.

I won't argue that.

My concern was the apparent whimsical assignment of the appellation of "sport" to a non-sport occurrence.

And, yes, I am all in favor of testing new technology and ideas.

But, such testing should be classified as such, otherwise the results are diminished.

Evel Knievel comes to mind.

I've been to Twin Falls, ID where he did the famous failed Snake River Canyon jump. The locals still despise him to this day.

Big show, never paid his bills, they say.

I don't consider a lot of things a sport, but they are listed as a sport.
