A crew from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources was able to remove a plastic lid from the neck of a young bear after around two years. Unknown is where or how the male bear got its head stuck in a five-inch hole in the lid. It's similar to a lid that fits 55-gallon drums used by hunters to bait bears. The DNR said that baiting is a legal method for hunting bears, but bait containers can only be used on private land and may only have holes either one inch or less in diameter or 22 inches or greater in diameter. DNR biologists became aware of the bear in 2023 after trail camera photos of the then-cub showed its head stuck in the lid. Officials say the bear would prove elusive over the next two years and occasionally appear on trail cameras but then disappear. The bruin weighed 110 pounds which is standard for a two-year-old bear, but had scarring and an abscess on its neck. Otherwise, the bear was healthy and released back into the wild. |
