Along Canada Border, Small-Town America Feels Sting of Trade War

Small businesses are hurting as border crossings between the US and Canada are down some 17% since Trump started imposing tariffs. Canadian's car trips to the US are down almost 32% compared to March 2024. Nationally, a 10% drop in Canadian tourism would cost the US up to 14,000 jobs and $2.1bn in business. Michigan is one of the places likely to acutely feel the brunt of Trump's idiocy. In 2023, Canadian visitors spent a collective $238m in that state alone. I can't imagine being this poor waitress working in an empty diner all day, not seeing her regular, friendly customers. Out of boredom she'll look at the TV screen and see the Dotard golfing in Florida or JD Vance enjoying a second honeymoon with Usha in India, all paid for by the hard-working American taxpayer. Simply unimaginable.
