A 30-year-old man from New Jersey was injured by a bison while visiting Yellowstone National Park on Tuesday morning, according to park officials. "At approximately 9:45 a.m. in the Upper Geyser Basin at Old Faithful, a man was gored by a bison after a large group of visitors approached it too closely," Yellowstone National Park said in a press release. "The individual sustained minor injuries and was treated and transported by emergency medical personnel." This is the second time this year a park visitor was injured by a bison. In May, a Florida man was gored after getting too close to a bison.

Bull weighs about a ton, stands around 6-feet at the hump, displays astounding agility, and can maintain a speed of 35 mph a lot longer than any of us.

Those who knew the critters best - the First Peoples - did not customarily approach them in the bold, challenging manner of this Garden Stater. There's a terrific account of the last big buffalo hunt of the Standing Rock Lakotas in 1882, attended by numerous serious injuries, in James McLaughlin's My Friend the Indian, Chapter 7 (archive.org).

Thanks for that tip on the hippo story. My youth included some three-ring circus time among folks - performers, roustabouts, ticket sellers, midway workers - who regarded the hippo as the most dangerous animal on the lot, including any and all of the big cats.

BisonAl Gores Moron at Yellowstone

The bison told the moron about global warming?

Headline should read:

Bison Bores Moron at Yellowstone

Morons aren't smart enough to understand and have very short attention spans.

#3: Hi Doc. I don't know why, but the carnival anecdote from your youth somehow reminded me of two stories and a film all at once: "Elmer Gantry" (Sinclair Lewis), "Something Wicked This Way Comes" (Ray Bradbury), and the Tyrone Power 1947 classic "Nightmare Alley."
