Florida Changes Law on Corporal Punishment in Schools

House Bill 1255, passed this spring, mandates that parents either consent for the entire school year or approve before each instance of corporal punishment in both traditional public and charter schools. The new rules take effect for the 2025-2026 school year.

Most of the places that actually still engage in this practice are found among the usual suspects in the backwaters of the former Confederacy (see en.wikipedia.org).

Usually i would say, that this is A Good Thing for the students. Requiring parental permission before they are intentionally hurt by the school.

But, then, this is Florida.

So I have concerns.

The biology teacher in my catholic high school used to paddle the boys when they did not turn in their homework.

He ended up being in the diocese settlement on raping children that is now bankrupting the diocese.
