According to new polling data, nearly 80 percent of Americans support extending Affordable Care Act (ACA) enhanced premium tax credits, which are set to expire at the end of this year -- and are at the center of a funding dispute that led to a shutdown of the federal government this week.

... The poll, conducted by KFF and released Friday, found that 78 percent of Americans want the tax credits extended, including 92 percent of Democrats, 59 percent of Republicans -- and even a majority (57 percent) of Republicans who identify as Donald Trump-aligned MAGA (Make America Great Again) supporters.

A separate analysis published by KFF earlier this week found that if the credits are not extended, monthly premiums for ACA Marketplace plans would more than double on average. Specifically, the current average premium of $888 would jump to $1,904 in 2026, a 114 percent increase. ...

From the poll:

Percent who say that if Congress let the enhanced tax credits expire, they would be very or somewhat concerned to hear each of the following:

1. Health insurance would be unaffordable for many people who buy their own coverage

2. About 4 million people would lose their health insurance coverage

3. Millions of people who work at small businesses or who are self-employed would be directly impacted as many of them rely on the ACA marketplace

MAGA scores 72-78% on all three, while Dems are at 95% on all three.

An overwhelming bipartisan majority wants the tax credits.
Republicans still won't allow it.

Trump's Backing a Healthcare Plan That Breaks His Promises (2017)
www.nbcnews.com

... President Donald Trump rode to the White House making big promises on health care -- pledges that he is now in serious danger of breaking. Let's look at how the president's words on the campaign trail stack up against what we know today.

In addition to Trump's comments on the stump, his administration has spent weeks raising expectations on its Obamacare replacement. Among the claims: The Republican plan would cover more people, reduce their premiums and costs, avoid cutting Medicaid, and leave no one worse off than under the former president's signature achievement.

So now that the House GOP's American Health Care Act (AHCA) is here, how do these pledges look?

Not good, according to an analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released on Monday. The report found the House plan -- which the Trump administration has thrown its support behind -- would cause millions to lose insurance and raise costs for vulnerable populations. ...

So that means if they don't, 80% will want the ACA repealed because it will be exposed as being awful

Those of us that don't get a subsidy know how bad the ACA is. Almost 30,000 a year and then a high deductible, co-pay and maximum out of pocket. If you are poor you may get the insurance for free, but you still avoid using it because of the deductible and co-pay. Health care cost too much. "Free insurance" only transfers that cost to Uncle Sugar.

Recent polling shows that about 78% of the American public supports extending ACA subsidies, with high support across party lines"even 59% of Republicans and 82% of independents agree with this position. Very few issues see similarly broad support in U.S. public opinion surveys. Other policies that sometimes approach this level include protections for people with pre-existing health conditions (which consistently poll above 80%) and maintaining Social Security and Medicare funding, both of which routinely receive 80%+ support in national surveys. Very few new policy initiatives, particularly those that involve significant government spending, reach such consensus across political affiliations.[1][5][6]

The ACA subsidy extension stands out as nearly unique in garnering such strong, bipartisan backing among American voters.[5][6][1]
