Roman legionnaires crucified prisoners both upside down as well as right side up.
Upside down was worse for the victim because the breathing was more torturous and difficult.
Right side up crucifixions took longer for the victims to expire.
Those legionnaires unable to tie knots to secure the prisoner resorted to hammer and nails.
