Underrated drummers . . .

When asked for a young drummer he really admired, Buddy Rich (!) mentioned this up-and-coming coed:

Wait for the solo. Karen Carpenter.

Thanks for that DBT2.

Karen Carpenter preferred drumming to singing.

Her brother re-modeled their modus operandi by putting her up front and away from the drums.

What a tragedy her life was.

Sidenote on drumming: Pete Townshend was a bit disappointed with Keith Moon's on some songs for the rock album Tommy, so he played the drums on some of those songs.

This is supposedly one of them: www.youtube.com

Original video edited and remastered with HQ stereo sound.

"Baby It's You" is a song written by Burt Bacharach (music), Luther Dixon (credited as Barney Williams), and Mack David (lyrics).

It was recorded by the Shirelles and the Beatles, and was a hit for both.

The highest-charting version of "Baby It's You" was by the band Smith, who took the song to number five on the US charts in 1969.

Smith was an American rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1969. They had a blues-based sound and scored a Top 5 hit in the United States in 1969 with a cover of the Burt Bacharach song "Baby It's You", featuring Gayle McCormick on lead vocals.

This disc sold over one million copies between July and October 1969, out-charted popular versions by the Beatles and the Shirelles, and received a gold record awarded by the R.I.A.A.

Smith's version appeared on their debut album, A Group Called Smith. The single was released on Dunhill Records (4206) in 1969.

It was their first and most successful release. This version alters the traditional vocal arrangement as performed by the Shirelles and the Beatles in favor of a more belted, soulful vocal. The single hit number five on the Billboard Hot 100. The Smith version was used in Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof.

@#12 ... Her brother re-modeled their modus operandi by putting her up front and away from the drums.

What a tragedy her life was. ...

Ms Carpenter was not the first artist to make a major turn in their career due to "re-modeling."

Nat King Cole started out as a piano player, and an excellent one at that.

But one night, during one of the group's gigs, the lead singer did not show up.

Mr Cole was ~elected~ to provide the vocals that evening.

And a career was born.

I have the Mosaic CDs of "The Complete Capitol Recordings of the Nat King Cole Trio."

The jazz performances on those CDs far outshines Mr Cole's later vocal performances. He was an extradorinary pianist.

imo, of course. :)

The DJ scene on Twitch is a great place to find new music and old music you've never heard before. You have to wade through a lot of Electronic Dance Music but there is some great content to be found. Also a place to find your Old Timey Radio Shows.

This is a contemporary band from Norway, so no surprise that it's very heavy metal influenced.

Here is a review,

With that album cover, you know exactly what you're getting. You've heard it before " a bunch of musicians who smoked one too many joints in high school, and then one too many joints in college, and decided to share their boundless love for early Black Sabbath with the world.

Great videos, Corky, thanks.

The Beatles video was mini-vignette of them wasn't it? Paul eyeing and smiling the bird, George trying to get her attention, John concentrating on the music, and Ringo by himself on the couch keeping time with the tambourine.

Brian Epstein should have been in the video somewhere.

I noticed the drummer for Smith used a double-bass, but nothing back-stopping them from moving forward. I used a weight to keep my bass from inching forward because the little stands on the bottom were ineffective.
