"To be sure, politics played a role in drawing the 2025 Map. But it was much more than just politics."

The impetus for Texas' new maps was a letter from Harmeet Dhillon, the assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice, that argued, erroneously, that the state's "coalition" districts those with majority-minority populations where that majority consists of more than one minority group were unconstitutional following a decision by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in Petteway v. Galveston County.

"Any mention of majority White Democrat districts"which DOJ presumably would have also targeted if its aims were partisan rather than racial"was conspicuously absent," Brown wrote.

Redistricting was added to the special legislative session called by Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, two days after Dhillon sent her letter.

"In other words, the Governor explicitly directed the Legislature to redistrict based on race," Brown wrote. "In press appearances, the Governor plainly and expressly disavowed any partisan objective and instead repeatedly stated that his goal was to eliminate coalition districts and create new majority-Hispanic districts."

Brown's decision eviscerates Dhillon's letter as containing "so many factual, legal, and typographical errors" that it is "challenging to unpack." The main problem is that the letter completely misinterprets the Petteway decision by arguing that its finding that the Voting Rights Act cannot require the drawing of coalition districts means that coalition districts are therefore unconstitutional.

"Petteway's holding that [Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act] does not require [coalition] districts' has no bearing on the permissibility of such districts as a matter of legislative choice or discretion,'" Brown wrote, quoting from other legal precedents.

Brown goes on to point out that Dhillon's explanations for which districts were unconstitutional coalition districts included multiple factual inaccuracies, including the background about how the district lines were initially drawn. He also notes what is missing from her letter.

Now he's a good cop.

The official who delivered the message, Paul Ingrassia, is a lawyer who previously represented the Tate brothers before joining the White House, where he was working as its DHS liaison.

In his written request, a copy of which was reviewed by ProPublica, Ingrassia chided authorities for taking the action, saying the seizure of the Tates' devices was not a good use of time or resources. The request to return the electronics to the Tates, he emphasized, was coming from the White House.

It turns out that Americans, who have long had conflicting feelings about immigration, don't much like the president's approach to it. They don't like being told one thing - in this case, that federal agents are going into cities to target dangerous criminals - then seeing something entirely different. They don't like people, including American citizens, being confronted and detained simply because of the color of their skin. They don't like masked federal agents gleefully stomping on our core values.

In another email chain from December 2017, a guest of Epstein's claimed they didn't want to risk running into Trump at Epstein's Paris apartment. In other emails sent just days after the presidential election, Epstein claimed he was headed for New York as "Trump gives many new things to do," and later said he was visiting Trump Tower.

Kates responded that "Glenn" must be there, indicating that Epstein was with Eva Andersson-Dubin and her husband, Glenn Dubin. In addition to helping to broker the sale of Dubin's hedge fund to JP Morgan, Epstein had previously dated Andersson-Dubin and was the godfather of the couple's children.

Kates asked, "who else is down there?"

Epstein replied: "david fizel, hanson, trump."

The House will vote on it, maybe today, but it'll never get through the Senate. As long as Trump has a stranglehold on the GOP we'll never see those files.

They will find out that Americans have way fewer qualms about aggressively confronting fat old men cosplaying as soldiers than they would national guardsmen.

We can't allow a handful of people to continue to control such a huge chunk of the wealth of our country. It is completely unsustainable.
