Former President Donald Trump's domestic policy agenda would amount to a tax increase on the vast majority of American households, according to a new analysis by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, thanks largely to his proposed tariffs on imported goods. read more

"Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough's analysis of Donald Trump's weekend speech turned downright dark on Monday. Scarborough said the words of Trump, running mate JD Vance and Trump family members in Butler, Pennsylvania, signaled that the "increasingly desperate" Republican nominee was "preparing for civil war." read more

Milton rapidly strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane Monday on a path toward Florida population centers including Tampa and Orlando, threatening a dangerous storm surge in Tampa Bay and setting the stage for potential mass evacuations less than two weeks after a catastrophic Hurricane Helene swamped the coastline. In 2021, Democrats attached an expensive pension bailout to the American Rescue Plan, the $1.9 trillion stimulus package they muscled through the Senate on a party-line vote ... The inclusion of an estimated $74 to $91 billion to shore up troubled multiemployer pension funds was a small legislative miracle for the Teamsters and other unions - and it never would have happened without Harris. She cast the deciding vote in a crucial step known as the motion to proceed, allowing the stimulus package to advance with zero Republican support. read more

All the Good Economic News Vindicates Bidenomics

Paul Krugman

It's hard to overstate just how good recent economic numbers have been.

On Friday, we learned that job growth is still solid while unemployment remains historically low. I think it's safe to say that Donald Trump's 2020 prediction that a Joe Biden presidency would mean a "depression" - a claim he's now repeating by predicting a "great depression" if Kamala Harris wins - didn't come true.

A week earlier we learned that inflation has continued to decline and is now more or less at the Federal Reserve's target of 2 percent. This success has defied the view, held by many economists just a couple of years ago, that disinflation would require years of high unemployment.

So does this good news vindicate Bidenomics? I would say yes - but not quite the way you might imagine.

The good economic news confirms that you can do well while doing good, that America can prosper in the present while preparing for the future by aiding children, building infrastructure, promoting the energy transition and more.

And that, at a fundamental level, is what Bidenomics was about - the assertion, now vindicated, that progressive policies can go hand in hand with prosperity.

Let's say it's true, which sources say it's not, why would he waste his time talking to Harris when is managing his state very well and getting what he needs from the president?

A source familiar with the situation said he was dodging the Democratic presidential nominee's calls because they "seemed political," according to a DeSantis aide.

"Kamala was trying to reach out, and we didn't answer," the DeSantis aide told NBC News.

Which "source" says that DeSantis didn't intentionally refuse to take calls from Harris and Biden? There has been no denial I've seen from the DeSantis camp, perhaps you have and would link to them for us.

And it's never "wasting one's time" to speak to the President or Vice President when they're calling about a natural disaster that's befallen your state, as federal workers coordinate with state personnel to serve the American citizens affected by the storms. Perhaps the Governor had an issue with the federal personnel in his state he could have personally addressed with either Executive.

I don't think I've ever heard a leader say that his nation's President and Vice President are only trying to reach him due to "politics." Everything is about politics ultimately whenever elected politicians are involved, including DeSantis' refusal. He wants to avoid the criticism from Trump other Republican governors are getting for countering Trump's false allegations that FEMA's response is lacking or underfunded due to the other job Congress gave them to fund immigrant programs in the states which are paid for from a separate budget established by Congress, not by the whims of the White House.

And just on this point of the phone calls alone, didn't Trump make it a political issue himself when he wrongly stated that Biden had not spoken to Governor Kemp along these very same lines?

Update:

Food reaches homes in flood-ravaged North Carolina by foot, horse and ATV

Keith Watkins and his wife had been isolated and without power for a week after Helene laid a deep gash through the earth leading up to his home, leaving what was once a steep, nearly mile-long driveway in ruins.

Jumping out of an off-road vehicle where the destroyed driveway met the street, Justin Wyatt held a pair of hot meals - barbecue, mashed potatoes, and mac and cheese. He proceeded to bring them to the couple the only way possible: by foot.

In Creston and throughout Helene-ravaged western North Carolina, many homes built in the woods between mountain ridges and down rural roadways remain inaccessible, even a week after the storm. So by foot, by hoof, by all-terrain vehicles - volunteers like Wyatt are getting food, medicine and other supplies to those still stranded by any means necessary.

The infrastructure damage in Creston, an unincorporated community near the Tennessee border, is staggering: teetering power lines, caved roads and dilapidated driveways.

No one can say for sure when things will be fixed. For now, it's an army of volunteers in hiking boots and on horseback who are mending those severed connections.

So, for those so critical of the federal government's response, FEMA should have anticipated the need for horses to reach people stranded and in need of relief? Can anyone tell us exactly how FEMA is going to get the heavy equipment necessary to remove road debris and repair roads in places unreachable by usual wheeled vehicular traffic and do it quickly?

Thank goodness for all the local volunteers who've responded to help their neighbors and know the land and terrain in ways outsiders couldn't possibly know. Military helicopters have been doing airdrops of supplies into unreachable areas as well.

Actually, for the first time in a very, very, very, very, (x 1000) long time, Strawlighter is actually correct. (Don't faint)

From April 9-July 3, nearly 300 Teamsters local unions nationwide conducted first-of-their-kind Presidential town halls, soliciting endorsement preferences from members via straw polls. The in-person voting was held prior to Biden's withdrawal from the race. The Teamsters' polling data shows members backed Biden 44.3 percent to Trump's 36.3 percent.

Following the Republican National Convention and Biden's campaign exit, the Teamsters commissioned a national electronic poll of its 1.3 million members, overseen by an independent third party. During a voting window from July 24-Sept. 15, rank-and-file Teamsters voted 59.6 percent for the union to endorse Trump, compared to 34 percent for Harris.

In the past week, following the Democratic National Convention and recent Presidential debate, the Teamsters commissioned independent polling firm Lake Research Partners to conduct the union's final national survey. In the poll ending Sept. 15, Teamsters selected Trump by 58 percent for endorsement over 31 percent for Harris.

teamster.org

Now, having shown the polling data, not all members participated and obviously those who did are more politically oriented than non-participants. And it doesn't say how many members abstained from responding to the polls.

But this does beg the question as to why the members supported President Biden but turned to Trump after he dropped out considering that Trump's positions did not change and Harris is running on most of the same policy stances as Biden was.

An objective person might discern that more than a few Teamsters members are misogynists and or bigots showing their innate prejudice, but that's just an observation currently unsupported by hard evidence - or what's affectionately known around here as a Strawlighter Special.

Biden and Harris and Democrats should pay dearly for their open border treason and gross ineptness. Candidate Harris never ever ran for any office or primary for President as part of the 2024 Presidential election.

Migrant Crossings at Southern Border Hit Lowest Level Under Biden Administration Oct 07 2024, 6:05 PM EDT

The number of migrants crossing the U.S. southern border illegally dropped to its lowest level during President Biden's administration in September, according to internal Department of Homeland Security data. Border Patrol apprehended nearly 54,000 individuals who crossed between legal entry points along the U.S.-Mexico border, down from the previous low of 56,000 in July and well below its peak in December, when 250,000 crossings were recorded.

Oooops.

As it regards the 2024 primary elections, exactly whom was Joe Biden's running mate that received every single vote that he did?

And what is the Vice President's independent constitutional role regarding the President being unable to perform their duties? The VP steps into the President's office and role.

Done and done.

You're simply an idiot Robson. Why you insist on reminding us all of that every single day remains one of the Retort's greatest mysteries.

There are plenty of important issues in the 2024 elections, but by most measures, the state of the economy is the dominant electoral concern, and voters' attitudes about the economy will very likely dictate the outcome.

With this in mind, Republicans desperately want Americans to believe that the nation is on the brink of economic collapse. Reality is telling a very different story. The New York Times reported:

Fresh employment data for September showed that hiring picked up strongly, the unemployment rate dipped and wage growth came in strong - adding to a string of recent data pointing to economic resilience. And the incoming evidence points to a clear conclusion: The economy is robust. Data revisions released last week showed that growth has been stronger and incomes have been more solid than previously understood. Retail sales data are holding up. And now, employers appear to be meeting resilient consumer demand by continuing to expand their work forces.

It was against this backdrop that a reporter asked Donald Trump on Friday, "Jobs are up, the stock market hit an all time high. Do you acknowledge that the economy is improving?"

"No," the former president said. "It's not."

One of the most frustrating things about the 2024 election cycle is the Republicans' willingness to simply create an alternate reality that voters are supposed to embrace. And when the evidence leaves little doubt that the U.S. economy is on strong footing, Republicans tell voters not to believe their lying eyes.

If reality were a stronger force in this year's elections, Trump and his party would be in real trouble.

One of the most frustrating things about the 2024 election cycle is the Republicans' willingness to simply create an alternate reality that voters are supposed to embrace.

This is the story of Trump's complete takeover of the GOP, turning it into a lie-fueled, conspiracy-driven, post truth entity untethered to anything resembling demonstrable facts and observed reality. And far too many Americans are making decisions and choices based upon false or discredited information spewed from the highest rungs of what's supposed to be a responsible political party.

All Trump and his Republican lemmings do daily is continuously yell "Fire" in the theater of public news and information, causing undue stress and strain upon those dealing with and addressing numerous issues as they exist in reality.

Helene response hurt by gross incompetence at the federal level.

Where precisely is that, and where are comments from governors saying what you allege?

TN GOP Gov. Lee says untruths are being spread about relief efforts

Gov. Bill Lee said Thursday he is "inspired" by the work of volunteers and first responders in addressing flood relief needs in East Tennessee and "disheartened" to hear misinformation is being spread about that relief getting to flood victims.

He was referring to reports being posted on social media and elsewhere falsely claiming that food, water and other supplies for flood victims are being intercepted or diverted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and related agencies.

"It's sad that would happen ... that people would push out that misinformation when aid is so badly needed," Lee told Six Rivers Media by phone while touring recovery efforts in Greene and Cocke counties. "It's ridiculous and disheartening. We don't need this kind of distraction now."

Kemp praises Biden's Hurricane Helene response amid Trump criticism

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) expressed his appreciation for the role the federal government has played in responding to Hurricane Helene, contradicting comments from former President Trump, who claimed during a Monday visit to the state that Kemp had trouble reaching President Biden.

Kemp and White House officials confirmed Monday that Biden spoke to the governor on Sunday to offer support as the state sorts through the damage from Hurricane Helene.

"He just said, Hey, what do you need?'" Kemp told reporters of his call with Biden. "And I told him, you know, we got what we need. We will work through the federal process. He offered that if there's other things we need, just to call him directly, which, I appreciate that. But we've had FEMA embedded with us since, you know, a day or two before the storm hit."
