Louisiana retailers can no longer charge customers extra for using debit cards under a new state law that took effect Saturday, giving consumers new legal protections and expanding the attorney general's authority to enforce the ban. Senate Bill 254 prohibits retail businesses from imposing a surcharge on customers who pay with a debit card instead of cash, check, credit card or another form of payment. The law defines a surcharge as any additional amount charged by a retail business that increases the cost of a transaction for the privilege of using a debit card. It does not apply to credit card transactions. Consumers who are assessed an unlawful debit card surcharge may recover actual damages from the retailer. Before filing a lawsuit, however, the customer must provide written notice of the alleged violation.
Multiple people were killed and others were injured in a shooting Saturday afternoon at an In-N-Out in Twin Falls, Idaho, according to officials. The shooter is dead, Josh Palmer, the city's public information officer, said, and all shelter-in-place orders have been lifted. Federal officials on Friday released an updated framework for the Colorado River, requiring Arizona, California and Nevada to significantly reduce their water use in the coming years. The plan, released by the Interior Department's Bureau of Reclamation, reduces the water available for use by the three states by 3 million acre-feet in the coming decade. In a November 2022 decision to appoint a court monitor to oversee the Trump family businesses during his civil fraud trial, a judge wrote (PDF Page 9) that Trump invoked "his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than 400 times in response to questions posed to him during his deposition." More than half of MAGA voters say they would support a Republican candidate accused of sexual assault, according to a new poll. In a recent Politico poll, 66 percent of MAGA voters who cast their ballot for President Trump in his last contest for the White House said they would back a GOP candidate even if "a former partner has accused the Republican candidate of sexual assault" rather than support the Democratic candidate in a hypothetical congressional race. MAGA voters showing support for a Republican candidate alleged to have committed sexual misconduct is not new. In fact, in May 2023, a jury found that Trump himself sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll in the mid-1990s.
