A Texas appeals court on Thursday overturned the illegal voting conviction of Crystal Mason, who was given a five-year prison sentence for casting a provisional ballot in the 2016 election while on supervised release for federal tax evasion.
Texas woman sentenced to 5 years over voting error acquitted
Glad her conviction was overturned, but the harm desired by the GOP is still done.
The point of these prosecutions is the suppress the Black vote. The vast majority of the voting public will forgo voting if there is even the slightest possibility that they may be prosecuted, regardless of whether they will ultimately prevail.
See Florida (where 23% of Black voters are disenfranchised, 31% of Black men):"The lawsuit, filed by the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition and individual plaintiffs, described a "bureaucratic morass" encountered by felons trying to find out if they are eligible to vote. [...] "The defendants have created and encouraged a chaotic and broken system that is incapable of collecting and assessing the necessary information, particularly data related to LFOs (legal financial obligations), to determine the voting eligibility of people with prior felony convictions," lawyers for the plaintiffs wrote." news.wfsu.org
