OIG: Trump's DOJ Improperly Subpoenaed Lawmakers

Department of Justice (DOJ) Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz announced today the release of a report examining DOJ's use of legal authorities, referred to in today's report as "compulsory process," to compel third parties to provide to DOJ non-content communications records of Members of Congress, congressional staffers, and members of the news media.

Putin's bitch weaponized his DOJ. What a shocker.

Weaponizing the DOJ? Whenever they accuse their opponents of anything, it is them admitting they are doing it.

More from the cited article...

... The report determined that under Trump, the Justice Department obtained 40 nondisclosure orders (NDOs) "related to the compulsory process that was issued for records of Members of Congress and congressional staffers, most of which were renewed at least once, with some extended for up to 4 years."

Those petitions also "relied on general assertions about the need for non-disclosure rather than on case-specific justifications." ...

... "relied on general assertions about the need for non-disclosure rather than on case-specific justifications." ...

So, they relied on the usual baseless GOP "general" assertions and not any specific knowledge of wrong-doing occurring?

More from the cited article...

... CNN reports that Kash Patel, Trump's pick to lead the FBI, was among those whose records were obtained.

Patel has previously complained about the matter, writing in a newsletter, "The DOJ illegally spied on me during the Russia Gate investigation!" Patel last year sued the Justice Department for secretly seeking access to his personal email account. ...

Well, isn't that precious. Nominee Patel was complaining about then Pres Trump's weaponization of the FBI?

@#4 ... You aint seen nuthin yet ...

Yeah. It seems that Nominee Patel may have an axe to grind becuse Pres-elect Trump, in his first term, seemed to sic the FBI on him.

The dripping irony is reaching flood-warning levels.

Hey Trumper idiots, ready to drop the "but he didn't do it last time" shtick and admit he's an authoritarian piece of garbage that shouldn't be anywhere near elected office let alone the Presidency?

"Tuesday's 96-page report concludes that seeking the records of lawmakers and staffers did not violate any Justice Department policies." So Dems were getting pissed because they were obviously leaking and didn't want to get caught?

Another bombshell?

Re 7
There was no period after "policies".

Lies of omission are still lies.

The full quote:

Tuesday's 96-page report concludes that seeking the records of lawmakers and staffers did not violate any Justice Department policies on the books at the time but the move nonetheless "risks chilling Congress's ability to conduct oversight of the executive branch ... and creat[es], at a minimum, the appearance of inappropriate interference by the executive branch in legitimate oversight activity by the legislative branch."

In addition the article states:

The report found the Justice Department did violate some its policies when seeking the communications of eight different journalists at the three outlets.

Did you (purposely) miss that?

then there was this little gem:

CNN reports that Kash Patel, Trump's pick to lead the FBI, was among those whose records were obtained. Patel has previously complained about the matter, writing in a newsletter, "The DOJ illegally spied on me during the Russia Gate investigation!" Patel last year sued the Justice Department for secretly seeking access to his personal email account.

It was a "bombshell" then. Just not now. Apparently.

Gosh. I wonder what has changed?
