Debate - 9-year-old girl gets permanent tattoo

A young girl is sparking debate online after she got a permanent tattoo at age 9. According to the tattoo artist, the girl got an American flag tattoo on her arm at Black Onyx Empire Tattoo in Yuma, Arizona when she was 9, and she recently came in for a touch up at age 10. She was accompanied by her parents. An Instagram video posted by the tattoo artist on Thursday shows the girl getting tattooed at the shop. The artist explained that the girl originally wanted a tattoo of Donald Trump on her neck, but that he "convinced her to do a more patriotic tattoo." He also said he told the child that if she still wanted the Trump tattoo a year later that she should get it, but that she should take time to think about it. A year later, now 10 years old, the girl came back for a touch-up of the American flag tattoo. The artist said she also changed her mind about wanting the Trump portrait.

The video sparked a debate online from people criticizing the tattoo shop.

According to Arizona law, it's legal to tattoo a child with a parent's permission.

Ben Shaw with the Alliance of Professional Tattooists said Arizona is one of the least regulated states for tattoo artists, where no license is required to practice.

"It is one of the most frustrating things about our career field and in Arizona where it has no regulations," he said.

With a parent's permission? Sure. I got a "Why So Serious?" tattoo when I was 15. One of the dumbest decisions in my life-- not because it looks bad or I no longer like it, but because my parents didn't give me permission first.

HAHAHAHA That's hilarious. A 9 year old wanting a Trump tattoo on her neck. Oh God help us all.

- she also changed her mind about wanting the Trump portrait.

I hear that's happening some these days, as a few (ok, very few so far) have finally figured out that Trump is a self-serving billionaire who is jealous of Pres Musk's much bigger dic... erm, stick, and is much more interested in him catching up to Musk than he is in Americans buying groceries.

Imagine that!

If you can legally tattoo a child, you can provide gender affirming care to them.

When she was in high school I noticed a tattoo my daughter was sporting... and she let me stew for a couple on minutes until she laughed and told me it was a stick on.

"If you can legally tattoo a child, you can provide gender affirming care to them."

Sure, that would be consistent. Just like if one has an issue with both of those things.

Coulda sworn it would be a Boaz thread.

Tattoos at any age are probably not a good long-term decision.

At nine years old, I was wondering which of the two Steinberg* sisters I was more in lust with. Both had just come into school during the 1969 NYC teachers' strike. Even at that age I was full of self-loathing and knew I had no game.

I'm almost 65 now, and I must admit I find the occasional tattoo kinda hot now.

Although not on 65- or 9-year-olds.

*Name changed to protect ... me.

Agreed. Neither of those are good for the child. But I guess it's your kid.

No it's not a cult.
