Canada and Mexico Face 25% Tariffs on Saturday Says Trump

US President Donald Trump has said he will follow through with his threat to hit imports from Canada and Mexico with 25% border taxes, known as tariffs, on 1 February.

"With China, I'm also thinking about something because they're sending fentanyl into our country, and because of that, they're causing us hundreds of thousands of deaths," Trump said.

"So China is going to end up paying a tariff also for that, and we're in the process of doing that."

Most of the fentanyl coming into the country is done by US Citizens. Just sayin

"Approximately 80% of people prosecuted and convicted of federal drug trafficking offenses were U.S. citizens, according to Tara McGrath, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California.

"They are people who have the ability to cross but also are going to be able to slip under the radar," McGrath said.

McGrath dismissed the idea that migrants and asylum seekers fleeing violence are the ones primarily bringing fentanyl into the country.

"That narrative is a dangerous misconception because that is not who we are seeing," she said."

;

"Experts who study transnational crime also dismissed the popular narrative linking migrants to drug smuggling.

"Mexican drug cartels control virtually all drug smuggling along the border. Putting their product in the hands of desperate migrants risking life and limb to cross illegally is bad for business", said Cecilia Farfan Mendez, an expert on drug policy and organized crime at the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation.

"It would not make sense to put your merchandise in such a risky situation," Farfan Mendez said.

"Is this migrant going to cross, is he not going to cross, is he going to get stopped, what is going to happen?"

Using legal border crossings is much less risky - particularly in San Diego, she said."

Is there anything Trump won't lie about.... and then blame some scapegoat while making all Americans pay more for goods and services?

I wonder if MAGA will see another egg again?

But I only wonder for a liitle bit. This is the "life" they have chosen.

Their destiny.

So now not only will groceries be more expensive due to the deportation of the labor force, but if the fat orange pedo does this, it will raise the cost of new houses through the roof, because he is deporting much of this labor force and Canada is where we get much of our lumber. Recall how expensive lumber was coming out of Covid because Canada was shut down longer than the US? That will be nothing compared to this. I hope Dotard doesn't do this, as I have some projects planned for the summer, but he was elected to lower the price of groceries and housing, issues Kamala Harris had workable plans to tackle, and the all-time DEI hire for incompetent white "men" is about to do the opposite on both issues. I predict his popularity will be in the 30's by the summer, as we continue to battle bird flu while mired in a Mango Mussolini created recession that GQP and MAGAt policies have no way of fixing.

"Recall how expensive lumber was coming out of Covid because Canada was shut down longer than the US?"
That was because of labor shortages.

#7 | Posted by fishpaw at 2025-01-31 12:41 PM

#7 And that led to a 400% increase in the price of lumber not 25%. You can get your lumber from US producers even if there are tariffs.

Fishbreath, like his gawd king, apparently has no idea how supply and demand work. If Canadian lumber is more expensive then people will buy American lumber, as it is more in demand IT WILL RISE IN PRICE stupid! Also, with the "mass deportations" there will be a severe labor shortage in the building trades, as Hispanics make up a very large portion of the that workforce. They also work in sawmills and other points along the lumber supply process. So good work moron! FAFO.

Well this will certainly help with inflation.

My clients that sell into the US from Canada are all planning on passing along the tariff to their customers.

Some will pass along 10% some will pass along the entire cost.

One client took the approach of sending the products to Taiwan for "processing" and then to the US thereby avoiding the tariff altogether.

Is there anything Trump won't lie about

When reporters get to question Trump after a lie, I think they fail to take the proper approach in calling him out. Yes, they do ask for evidence which is good. When he fails to provide it they need to call out his biases for making such an unfounded statement. For example, when Trump said that DEI was the cause of the plane/helicopter collision and justified the statement by saying "I have common sense", the reporters response should have something to the effect of "you do realize that making unfounded statements like that is the classic definition of racism, sexism, homophobia or stupidity. Mr. President, are you a racist, sexist, homophobe or just stupid?"

FishPawn proves daily there isn't a Trump shht sandwich too revolting for him to swallow whole.

We get it. You're okay with everything the criminal president does.

Pretty sure it's because Trump will kick them out should they expose his stupidity and incompetence.

This is going to hurt a lot of people. It will increase the cost of living by at least $2,600 per year. That's IN ADDITION to Trump increasing taxes by $1,500 per year (while the top 5% sees their taxes fall). The middle class should be pissed off about this.

The middle class should be pissed off about this.

There is no middle class any more.

Just the rich and the poor.

The rich have convinced the poor to fight amongst themselves while they finish looting the nation.

I love Canada's response 75% on American goods and 100% on Teslas. Although is should be spelled Tessla with the middle letters looking like the German SS for their neo-nazi CEO.

Welcome to life becoming more expensive.

The United States imports oil to meet its energy needs, even though it produces some oil. This is because the amount of oil produced, refined, and demanded can vary geographically.
Reasons for importing oil
Infrastructure
The majority of the infrastructure for producing, refining, and transporting oil is in the Gulf Coast and mid-continent regions. States with high demand for motor fuel, like Florida, Oregon, and the New England states, lack this infrastructure.
Refinery configuration
Many U.S. refineries are designed to process heavy, sour crude oil, which is less common in the United States. Heavy, sour crude oil is often cheaper to import than light, sweet crude oil.
Transportation costs
The cost of transporting oil can affect whether it's more economical to import or export.
Supply and demand
The supply and demand for oil at a specific location can affect whether it's more economical to import or export.
The United States imports oil from countries like Mexico and Canada.

So, for those simpletons who don't understand why we import oil when we are a net exporter it is about location, location, location of the oil, the type of oil and cost of transportation.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, raising tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, will make oil more expensive (it is unavoidable, since we don't have the capacity to make up the difference).

I already saw a spike in gas prices near me.

Get use to it.

You've been informed and educated. Be a better person.

Canada's Trudeau Announces 25% Counter Tariff on American goods.

Trumpf has said if Canada responded with counter tariffs, he would just raise his.

We already know how this goes; higher prices and more inflation for Americans.

Thanks, Trumpers!!
