More from the article ...

... On Friday, President Trump signed an executive order telling the FAA to lift its 52-year ban on supersonic flight over the US and told the FAA to devise a scheme to limit noise pollution from such aircraft.

Supersonic flight has been banned over the US for civilian aircraft since 1973 after testing showed the noise it created was too disruptive, breaking windows in some cases. Since then, NASA and private startups have developed ways to reduce the sound of sonic booms from faster-than-Mach 1 flight, and there's currently legislation before Congress to allow these high-tech aircraft to fly over the US, potentially halving the flight time between New York and Los Angeles.

Now the president has issued an order that does basically what the legislation, sponsored by four Republican senators, asked for.

The FAA has also been instructed to devise a system to regulate such aircraft's noise levels in conjunction with "community acceptability, economic reasonableness, and technological feasibility," to allow flights over the homeland. ...

My guess would be that the FAA will optimize unfettered "economic reasonableness" over any "community acceptability" concerns.

US super sonic ban was put in place simply because of the Concorde, and America falling behind in the technology.

Everyone but Americans seem to understand this.

My guess is gaslighter doesn't understand why the ban was dropped. It had nothing to do with sonic booms the community could hear.

What is your implication? 2025 has been an average year for aviation.

a.k.a., optimizing profits for the wealthy, while making more noise for everyone else.

My question would be, over which areas around the airports might the FAA send these booming flights?

High-income areas?

It's not just the sonic booms. Back in the Concorde days the planes engines themselves made a lot more noise that regular airliners. Concorde had four aferburning turbojet engines that ran at full power on takeoff and relatively high power on landing. I saw one take off at YYC in the '80s and it was way louder than normal airport traffic.

YYZ, but who cares?

More people would care if Trump wasn't trying to get his war started in Los Angeles.

@#9 ... YYZ, but who cares? ...

YYZ is Toronto's airport code.

My concern is more with JFK, LGA and EWR, i.e., the main NYC airports.

I remember the Concorde landin and taking off from Miami International but I don't really remember the noise as a big issue. They took off right over I-95 bavk in those days. That said my family and I lived in the direct flight path of regular aitline jets from Foty Lauderdale international and the noise was terrible and so often that it was a real problem that contributed to our decisuition to move to Hollywood, FL, much closer to the ocean.

The Concorde had the same problems even in Europe - so try again. The Sonic Booms limited them to Trans Oceanic flights only.

While there are ways to lessen the noise, I don't know how many are practical and to what extent it can be dissipated. If the booms happen near maximum cruising altitude (in the upper 40ks feet), it lessens the noise level but spreads it over a wider area. Nobody is going to build the Quiet Spike version of an airliner either since it is not practical.
