Downturn in International US Travel May Last Beyond Summer

For a few hopeful weeks this summer, a bright billboard on the major highway linking Toronto to New York greeted Canadian drivers with a simple message: "Buffalo Loves Canada."

Buffalo's struggle reflects a broader downturn in international tourism to the U.S. that travel analysts warn could persist well into the future. From northern border towns to major hot spots like Las Vegas and Los Angeles, popular travel destinations reported hosting fewer foreign visitors this summer.

Experts and some local officials attribute the trend that first emerged in February to President Donald Trump's return to the White House. I think I saw this a week ago, flying home from London to DFW.

The plane was EMPTY.

The last time I did this, a mere two months ago, the plane was FULL.

Take advantage. You can park within a 1/4 mile of the Pololu Valley trailhead right now. Not many vehicles on the Mauna Kea access road.

I think they have probably underestimated the effects of their policies on the choices made by foreigb tourists who can choose from many destinations. The arrogance of Trump threateningeven the use of military force to take over parts of nations that have been close allies for many decades cannot be ignored. Who wants to risk arrest for speaking a foreign language in public?

Who would want to vacation in occupied cities?

Who wants to visit ideologically sanitized museums?

Who wants to go to national parks full of trash and overflowing pit toilets because they don't have the staff they need to clean them?
