... Roku TV sets come with ads. Generally, these are restricted to Roku's home and menu screens, its screensavers, and its first-party video channels, and once you start playing video, the only ads you'll see are the ones from the service you're streaming from. That said, Roku TVs have shown ads atop live TV before.

Now, the company is apparently experimenting with ways to show ads over top of even more of the things you plug into your TV. A patent application from the company spotted by Lowpass describes a system for displaying ads over any device connected over HDMI, a list that could include cable boxes, game consoles, DVD or Blu-ray players, PCs, or even other video streaming devices. Roku filed for the patent in August 2023 and it was published in November 2023, though it hasn't yet been granted.

The technology described would detect whether content was paused in multiple ways"if the video being displayed is static, if there's no audio being played, if a pause symbol is shown anywhere on screen, or if (on a TV with HDMI-CEC enabled) a pause signal has been received from some passthrough remote control. The system would analyze the paused image and use metadata "to identify one or more objects" in the video frame, transmit that identification information to a network, and receive and display a "relevant ad" over top of whatever the paused content is. ...

@#1 ... display a "relevant ad" over top of whatever the paused content is ...

"relevant ad" seems to mean that Roku has been harvesting your private viewing data, and selling it to advertisers.

Big Tech gone amok.

Yet another reason to consider getting a home multimedia PC instead, as they are much more capable machines and cost only slightly more than a Roku.

Well, yeah.

(my choice in that area is ... www.jriver.com )

But that entails a significant effort on the part of the consumer.

Battles with the cable company over whether or not the cable card is really valid. Battles that cable companies seem to try to, I'll say, encourage in order to push people to the monthly (overpriced?) rental of their equipment.

First, most of us dumped the TV part of cable years if not decades ago.

Second, even if you didn't, you can watch it on the cable company web site. That's been a thing for years.

If you've got a computer connected to the TV...

But this is NOT about that. It's about TV sets that monitor the HDMI input and dump ads at you any time you pause the video. This is new and infuriating. And the only way to deal with it is to rip out the TV's ability to connect to ANY network.

I simply just hit the Mute Button every time a commercial comes up,
and surf on my phone. Literally, the mute button is fast becoming
my favorite button on the remote...

Annoying commercial featuring politicians....MUTE!

Sexual enhancement drugs for the poor guys that can't get it up....MUTE!

Feminine itch products that I haven't the slightest interest in....MUTE!

it becomes quite habit forming, hitting that mute button...

Which is exactly what I do. Commercials are irritating, stupid for the most part, and too many. When I go shopping, if a product has been advertised to me lately, I'll buy anything but that product. That's my get back for annoying me.
