Conservative MP Natalie Elphicke has defected to the Labour Party, saying the Tories "have become a byword for incompetence and division". It is the second defection to Labour for Rishi Sunak in less than two weeks, after Dan Poulter also quit the Tories.

... In a statement released just as PMQs was starting, the MP for Dover said the key factors for her decision were housing and border security.

She accused Rishi Sunak of "broken promises" and abandoning key pledges.

It is the second defection to Labour for Rishi Sunak in less than two weeks, after Dan Poulter also quit the Tories.

Labour will retain their existing candidate in Dover and Deal at the next general election and Mrs Elphicke will stand down.

The constituency replaces Dover, where Mrs Elphicke had a majority of 12,278 at the last election, following boundary changes. ...

OK, with my minimal understanding of the politics involved, one thing that caught my attention was how "last minute" this defections was.

Hopefully there is someone on this most august site who can explain what happened.

Even Murdoch's UK Times is giving the Torries a hard hammering. The party has been in power for, I think, 14years and it shows. They've grown fat, sluggish, angry, very Trumpy. And they will probably take a shellacking whenever Sunuk figures out to end his death of a thousand cuts and call an election sometime before year's end. Bear in mind, this is the party that produced as a PM Liz Truss, the length of whose woeful premiership was literally bested by a celebrated head of lettuce ripening in a grocer's window. And now they're down to trying to send immigrants who illegally cross the Channel to ... wait for it ... Uganda. So there you go.
