In the aftermath of Saturday's assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump told ABC News' Jonathan Karl that he was rewriting his "humdinger" of a keynote address and will instead deliver "more of a unity speech."

"Even in this presidential race, his third in a row, Trump has made retribution against his political enemies a theme of his campaign. He's suggested jailing his opponents and going after President Biden and his family, not to mention his repeated attempts to overturn an election he lost in 2020.

"When Trump says that the country should 'unite,' he means 'unite behind Trump'," Jennifer Mercieca, a historian of political rhetoric at Texas A&M University, told Newsweek.

"If Trump really sought to unite the nation, then he would be offering to compromise with the Democratic party to solve the nation's problems."

I have noticed that, even before the assassination attempt, fmr Pres Trump had seemed to abandon his "revenge" rhetoric at his rallies.

imo, we are seeing the classic change of a candidate's message.

Early in the campaign, go extreme in positions to gain attention and get the primary votes from those in your party.

But once the primary votes are attained, move more towards the center and mellow out, because from then on the candidate needs to attract and maintain the votes of the more centrist folk who do not or cannot vote in the primaries.

Fmr Pres Trump has been following that political playbook, even before the assassination attempt.

I examined the close-up photos of his ear after the shot. His ear is wholly intact. I doubt it will be noticeable at all once the scab is gone.

His speech last night started out ok, sort of. Garbage, but more temperate and all about him (with massive exaggerations, of course). Then he went dark, demonizing immigrants, lying his ass off, and creating hostility and division all over again. Vintage "golden escalator" "raping your children" Trump.
