Questions about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives are being raised after six Tishomingo students appeared in a picture displaying a racial slur on social media.

Last fall, Governor Kevin Stitt signed an executive order to remove DEI programs in higher education.Shortly after, State Superintendent Ryan Walters said he wants DEI programs out of school districts, too. He also announced new rules at a State Board of Education meeting prohibiting DEI programs.

Walters, who hasn't said anything publicly yet on "X" regarding the Tishomingo incident, said in a statement News Channel 8 requested, "Every Oklahoma student deserves a classroom environment free of racial bigotry and it will not be tolerated. The district acted swiftly to discipline the students responsible, and local law enforcement is involved to ensure protection and security for our students. Our agency is monitoring the situation closely and is in contact with the district to offer additional support."

His office didn't respond to the question if DEI programs being removed from schools will cause an increase in incidents like this. We also reached out to Governor Stitt's office for a comment since he signed the executive order, but we did not hear back.

@#5 ... Are the morons even on the football team? ...

While I realize the article is about high school, your mention of football raised one of my concerns...

Incompatibility of Sports and Higher Education (2019)
www.nas.org

... College sports programs were developed as a supplement to the academic experience, a means by which to foster in young students an appreciation for teamwork, competition, public spiritedness, and a sense of fair play. As time has passed, though, big-time college sports have become a revenue generating form of mass entertainment, making sports programs a primary vehicle through which many universities chase status and money. ...

So under the headline of ~what is wrong with higher-level education nowadays~, I'd add "... big-time college sports have become a revenue generating form of mass entertainment, making sports programs a primary vehicle through which many universities chase status and money. ..." . Note there is no mention of the quality of education in that statement.

Lamplighter is there something stopping you from creating a new article all about higher education being incompatible with contact sports?
