Mike Brewer of Brewer and Shipley. Loved them! "One toke Over The Line" -- that song was not played on bunch of stations because it was about Pot. But the song put them on the map.

Mike Brewer, half of the iconic folk-rock duo Brewer & Shipley, has passed away at 80. Known for their 1971 hit 'One Toke Over the Line,' Brewer's music left a lasting impact on the folk-rock scene.

... Michael Brewer (April 14, 1944 -- December 17, 2024) was an American musician. He and Tom Shipley were the music duo Brewer & Shipley.

Brewer formed a duo in Los Angeles during early 1966 named Mastin & Brewer with singer/songwriter Tom Mastin. The group recruited drummer Billy Mundi and bass guitar player Jim Fielder for live performances, opening for The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield during spring 1966. When Mastin left during sessions for an album, Brewer enlisted his brother Keith and the pair recorded a lone single 45 for Columbia Records company, "Need You", backed by "Rainbow" (written by Tom Mastin and Brewer before the former's departure). ...

Brewer died at his home in Missouri on December 17, 2024, at the age of 80. ...

I bought three Brewer and Shipley albums all at once, thinking I might have liked them. Barely made it through one album. Then again, they were just a buck fifty apiece when I got them.

Yeah, I readily admit that they were not the most popular duo of the time. They had a few songs I enjoyed.

Then there's this ...

There was a reluctance by radio stations to even play their biggest "hit" --- One Toke Over The Line --- because it was about marijuana.

Oddly, then the song was curiously covered on The Lawrence Welk Show back in the day ...

... Did they realize what they were singing?! Gail Farrell and Dick Dale sing Brewer and Shipley's song "One Toke Over The Line," on The Lawrence Welk Show. Lawrence describes this song as a "modern spiritual". Ummm, okay, I guess so, "technically"... ...

Yeah, the lyrics do mention "Sweet Jesus" and "Sweet Mary," but my guess would be that those mentions were not in the "modern spiritual" context the show proffered ...
