Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

A couple was left shaken after two masked men broke into their home the day after Christmas, leading the husband to shoot and kill one of them, according to Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells. It happened around 9 p.m. Thursday at a home off of Hickory Hammock Circle in the River Club area in Bradenton. The couple had been enjoying their night at home when the husband got an alert from home security cameras about motion detected on the side of the house. As he checked the cameras, Wells said the homeowner saw two masked men outside trying to break in. He reportedly told his wife to get to a safe place and grabbed his gun before going to a spare bedroom/office where he was "immediately" confronted by one of the masked invaders.

"The bottom line is " this is the state of Florida. If you want to break into someone's home, you should expect to be shot," Wells said.

From the cited article...

... "The bottom line is -- this is the state of Florida. If you want to break into someone's home, you should expect to be shot," Wells said. ...

If that is within the laws of Florida, I have no problem with that statement.

But I also raise the question of police breaking into someone's residence and shooting them to death.

For example...

How is that dichotomy addressed?

It's generally ignored.

I mean, in most states this is true.

The story highlights two things.

1. Layers of defense are important and cameras these days are cheap.

2. Never go seeking or trying to clear a house. It's a great way to get killed and this dude got lucky.

a man protects his family and a sheriff tells criminals what they already should know

I regret.......that he didn't "rehabilitate" both of them.
