Good point, ZED. What may appear inevitable about developments in Iran at that time did not seem quite so clear on 1979. There were revolutionaries around Khomeini - Ghobtzadeh, etc. - who thought they and others of like mind could manipulate the old cleric into implementing policies of modernity. These Enlightenment spinoffs ended up on the run or dead, as the mullahs outmaneuvered them while tightening their grip.
