"The nationalist populist Serbian president railed against critics of the project for destroying an investment of "at least 750 million" ($880 million).

"As a state and as a nation, we are major losers," Vucic told media in Belgrade.

"We will now be left with a destroyed building, and it is only a matter of time before bricks and other parts start falling off it, because no one will ever touch it again."

Serbia's organized crime prosecutor this week published an indictment against Culture Minister Nikola Selakovic and three other officials for allegedly committing illegal acts by removing the General Staff building's status as a "cultural asset," which was required for construction to proceed.

The complex had been granted protected cultural heritage status in 2005."

Gee... we could use an independent organized crime prosecutor. But this just frees up money for the Trump Gaza Riviera Casino and Hotel.

... "We have lost an exceptional investment," Aleksandar Vucic, Serbia's embattled president, said on Tuesday. "I will personally ensure that everyone who participated in causing this damage is held accountable."

Vucic, whose cosiness with Russia's Vladimir Putin has left him few western allies, had personally courted the Trumps. But thousands of demonstrators have staged protests at the site of the proposed hotel and apartment building, a historically resonant spot long off-limits to developers.

A spokesperson for Affinity Partners, an investment company run by Trump's son-in-law and diplomatic envoy, Jared Kushner, which was developing the buildings alongside the Trump Organization, said: "Because meaningful projects should unite rather than divide, and out of respect for the people of Serbia and the City of Belgrade, we are withdrawing our application and stepping aside at this time."

I remember a poster I saw at one of Trump's failed attempts to 'build over' a cultural icon. Whether by ignorance or Trump hubris, the Trump organization was stopped in its tracks for failing to get the required approval from the community.

The poster said: "T-H-I-M-K ..... A-H-E-A-D

And no, that's not a typo.
