Fear not, they're about to be really popular again regardless of subsidies.

Tariffs Work!

"The Obama administration imposed tariffs of 31% to over 250% on Chinese solar panels and cells in 2012, targeting what they identified as illegal subsidies and dumping practices."

"2018 Initiative: President Trump imposed 4-year tariffs (starting at 30%) on imported solar cells and modules, specifically targeting China's 80% global market share."

"The Biden administration has significantly increased tariffs on Chinese solar products to protect domestic manufacturing, raising tariffs on solar cells (whether or not assembled into modules) to 50% in 2024. These measures also include a 50% tariff on solar wafers and polysilicon, along with restricting exemptions for solar manufacturing equipment."

"In early 2025, the Trump administration significantly intensified tariffs on Chinese solar products, raising duties to 60% and initiating investigations into key components like polysilicon. Additional 10"25% tariffs were imposed on related materials, with efforts to close loopholes for Chinese products routed through Southeast Asia. These measures aim to protect U.S. manufacturing but are expected to increase costs for solar projects."

Which is exactly how it's supposed to be done.

Market pricing can't compete with overwhelming foreign government subsidies.

China still subsidizes them.

Anyways, the original joke was an oil price reference.

While the GOP kills subsidies for renewables they blissfully keep subsidizing fragile fossil fuels.

It's the murican way.

As of this morning (9am, EDT, March 12) both Brent Crude and West Texas Intermediate are up more than 45% in the past month. Month. What a moronic set of actions to reduce wind and solar energy production in this country, and to also eliminate subsidies for EV's. And The Dotard's attempt to fire up Us fossil fuel production forgets the fact that you can't just turn a valve in many cases--you have to hire a crew and a drilling rig, haul everything out there, receive about two miles of pipe, punch a hole, hit a pool or pocket, then start pumping.

Trump's action benefits only one person--Vlad Putin, who can now sell his oil at marked up prices so as to support his war machine. Trump has clearly shown himself to be either a patsy for Russia, or the most incompetent national leader in the last millennium. Maybe both...
