Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, March 16, 2026

America is going through something similar to 9/11 and will be far more influential. The damage to our national security, our economy, our relationship to the rest of the world cannot be understated. This is truly the death of the American empire. We are showing ourselves to be a paper tiger. We have denigrated our allies for the past 14 months and now they are saying F U. We are destroying the economies of ME countries who were desperately trying to move from a post-colonial world to economies based on something other than natural resource exploitation.

We will be humbled by a 3rd rate military. We will push the world into a recession and probably a depression. Our biggest ally in the ME is an albatross around our neck who commits genocide on our dime. China has cornered the market on the military of the future (drones). Shit, we can't even convict an insurrectionist (or even keep him out of office) or hold pedophiles to account. Pay attention, carefully, what you are witnessing will be the images that will haunt America for the next 50 years.

The president is contemplating seizing islands in the straits of Hormuz to facilitate the transport of oil.

Leaving aside all of the lies and hyperbole and changing justifications and contradictions and the amateurishness of the Secretary of Defense.

Seizing island in the straits of Hormuz or escorting tankers through and fro WILL NOT WORK.

The goal is to permit oil tankers to flow through.

Well, those tankers have to load in ports from port facilities with oil piped through pipelines from well fields.

Each and every point along that path is vulnerable to interdiction by Iran.

I have heard NO ONE state that obvious fact. That OBVIOUS fact.

If Trump is contemplating military action with land forces to that end it is nothing more than another dead end.

And, it should go without saying that any land operation will be devastating to our forces.

I could bore you with a long litany of unsurmountable problems, from the terrain to projecting tactical air power over the combat zone, to simple numbers and locations of Iranian artillery and missiles, to the Iranian navy's submarine and surface ships to a lack of munitions, to destruction of our radar system to a host of other problems.

Is anyone telling that to the President?

And, again, if somehow, we seize islands at low cost and am able to supply those forces and that allows us to escort tankers through the narrows, and somehow, we can convince private companies to put their billion-dollar vessels at risk, what then?

Well Iran drops a drone into a port facility.

Or Iran bombs a pipeline

And we are back to square one.

THERE IS NO MILITARY OPTION FOR VICTORY. SHORT OF SOMETHING THAT HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE-REGIME CHANGE THROUGH AIR POWER.

I remind you that Israel, after 2+ years of ruthless bombing that turned the Gaza strip into a moonscape DID NOT DEFEAT HAMAS.

In 1953 we destroyed every single building in the capital of NK and they did not quit.

That is a pipe dream.

Maybe, perhaps Iran might quit? NO, they'd have to be insane to quit without major concessions. Iran will NEVER have the advantages they have now. They will need sanctions relief and some iron cast guarantee that Israel or the US won't be back in 6 months.

No, there is NO military solution to this.

Then one must ALWAYS consider that Trump may WANT to keep this war going for the foreseeable future for his own political ends here in America.

So, again, these are historic times. Pay attention.

As of Monday morning, Brent crude, the industry benchmark, was priced at $106 per barrel, up more than 40 percent from $72 per barrel on February 27.

A report conducted by the global macroeconomic firm Capital Economics warned that if the conflict drags on, oil prices would rise further to around $130pb in Q2 [second quarter]."

Our country and our reputation is dying. Deal with it or not Jeff. It's happening at breakneck speed. I'm just glad my dad isn't around to see it. It would break his heart.
