Switchfoot - Meant To Live (2003)

Lyrics excerpt...

genius.com

...
This is the first song on Switchfoot's album The Beautiful Letdown. This song is about life and the choices that we make that may lead to regret.

[Verse 1]
Fumbling his confidence
And wondering why the world has passed him by
Hoping that he's bent for more than arguments
And failed attempts to fly, fly

[Chorus]
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside
Somewhere we live inside
We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside

Simple Minds - Don't You (Forget About Me) (1984)
www.youtube.com

I once saw this song being performed at a burial ceremony...

Lyrics excerpt ...

genius.com

...
Written by Keith Forsey and Steve Schiff, Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)" was released as a single February 20, 1985 and was featured as the main theme of the classic 1985 teen film The Breakfast Club.

Originally offered to The Fixx, Bryan Ferry and Billy Idol but all declined (Idol did however record his own version years later). Forsey then asked Simple Minds, who initially refused but eventually agreed per suggestion of their label, A&M.

It's said that the band rearranged and recorded the song in three hours and "promptly forgot about it," considering it just another song they recorded for somebody.

The song would go on to top the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it Simple Minds' biggest hit (in the U.S.) to date.

[Verse 1]
Won't you come see about me?
I'll be alone, dancing, you know it, baby
Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving me everything inside and out, and
Love's strange, so real in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on
Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby

[Chorus]
Don't you forget about me
Don't, don't, don't, don't
Don't you forget about me

[Bridge]
Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down

Will you recognize me?
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down, down
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Ooh, woah

The subject of the song, the injustice suffered by Australian Aboriginal people and the need to repay the debt that generations of settlers owe them, is one of the reasons for its success.

To pay our share
The time has come
A fact's a fact
It belongs to them
Let's give it back

Lyrics excerpt...

...
[Verse 1]
Jump down the shelters to get away
The boys are cockin' up their guns
Tell us general, is it party time?
If it is, can we all come?

[Pre-Chorus 1]
Don't think that we don't know
Don't think that we're not trying
Don't think we move too slow
It's no use after crying

[Chorus]
Saying it's a mistake
It's a mistake
It's a mistake
It's a mistake

[Verse 2]
After the laughter has died away
And all the boys have had their fun
No surface noise now, not much to say
They got the bad guys on the run

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Don't try to say you're sorry
Don't say he drew his gun
They've gone and grabbed old Ronnie
He's not the only one

'Cos we know that you love all that power
Is it on then, are we on the brink?
We wish you'd all throw in the towel

[Pre-Chorus 3]
We'll not fade out too soon
Not in this finest hour
Whistle your favourite tune
We'll send a card and flower

[Chorus]
Saying it's a mistake

John Prine: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Mar 19, 2018

"John Prine's new songs are equally powerful and he opens this Tiny Desk concert with "Caravan of Fools," a track he wrote with Pat McLaughlin and Dan Auerbach.

Prine adds a disclaimer to the song saying, "any likeness to the current administration is purely accidental."

That song, and his second tune, the sweet tearjerker "Summer's End," are from John Prine's first album of new songs in 13 years, The Tree of Forgiveness, produced by Dave Cobb.

For this Tiny Desk Concert John Prine also reaches back to his great "kiss-off" song from 1991 called "All the Best," and then plays "Souvenirs," a song intended for his debut full-length but released the following year on his 1972 album Diamonds in the Rough."

The first time my wife and I went on a date it was to the Bluebird. John Prine and his brother, Danny, were doing a duo.

We still laugh about it. Danny towered over John, but was the obvious 2nd fiddle.

The asides Danny made - we all could hear - were hilarious! And he'd make this rock star faces ... like he was really into a lick.

"Quit telling me what to play!!"
"Mom loved you more ..."
"(response to unheard John comment to Danny)

It was like a comedy show. Roger Cook, who wrote "I'd like to teach the world to sing" and other classics, showed up, drunk on his ---, and added even more to the comedic tinge of the set. Fun time!!

Universal Soldier " Donovan {DES Stereo} Live

"Universal Soldier" is a song written and recorded by Canadian singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie. The song was originally released on Sainte-Marie's debut album It's My Way! in 1964.

"Universal Soldier" was not an immediate popular hit at the time of its release, but it did garner attention within the contemporary folk music community. It became a hit a year later when Donovan covered it, as did Glen Campbell.

Sainte-Marie said of the song: "I wrote 'Universal Soldier' in the basement of The Purple Onion coffee house in Toronto in the early sixties. It's about individual responsibility for war and how the old feudal thinking kills us all."

Brewer & Shipley - Song From Platte River (1970)
www.youtube.com

Lyrics excerpt...

genius.com

...
I was freezing on the banks of Platte River
And I was thinking of General Custer and his last stand
And I bowed my head, what has he done
He's got my freedom on the run

I was thinking how they shot Mister Lincoln
And I remember all the mountains that he made
And I bowed my head, what have they done
They've got my freedom on the run

The River is wide and it's wicked
But it ends where there's peace for one and all

I was thinking of the measure of my weakness
Like so many I condemn and do not know
And I bowed my head, what have we done
We've got our freedom on the run

The River is wide and it's wicked
But it ends where there's peace for one and all

@#36 ... Wet Leg ...

They took their name from how the people of the Isle of Wright describe immigrants coming ashore on their island, i.e., they have a wet leg when they leave their boat and walk ashore.

OK, that aside.

They've been quite the phenomenon in the NYC area. I first heard their song Chaise Longue back in the day when it was first released, and not yet known, on the radio station I enjoy ( www.1071thepeak.com ). The "alternative" new music it presents is one of the reasons I like listening to that station.

The station went crazy over the song.

I scratched my head and wondered why.

Carly Simon - It Was So Easy (1972)
www.youtube.com

Lyrics excerpt...

www.carlysimon.com

...
I remember a time, rompin' through the woods
Sun against our skin instead of clothes
When we felt hungry we would eat
When we felt glad we'd dance
And whenever we felt drowsy we would doze

It was so easy then never takin' any stands
It was so easy then, holdin' hands

I remember a time when our fears could be named
And courage meant not refusing dares
I remember when we took such cares to step never on the cracks,
no only on the squares
Or else we'd be abducted by the bears

It was so easy then never makin' any plans
It was so easy then, holdin' hands

It was so easy then never makin' any plans
It was so easy then, holdin' hands

And now we are grown, with debts and regrets
And broken hearts and sentimental schemes
Now every tender failure seems to overthrow old dreams
Love can drive a normal woman to extremes

It was so easy once, holdin' hands without a plan
It was so easy once holdin' hands
Just holdin' hands
...
