In Congress, Republicans are pushing a strict proof-of-citizenship proposal for residents to vote, encouraged by President Donald Trump. The California plan -- also backed by Republicans -- is being pitched as a common sense idea to strengthen confidence in voting in a vast state with more than 23 million people registered to cast a ballot. You already have to provide identification to vote in person in Los Angeles.
You go to a voting station, they find your name on their list to show you're registered and eligible to vote at the voting station, they check your ID against the name on their list, you sign your name next to your name on their list list, you get a ballot.
Welcome to California.

Odd. As of April 24, 2026, the National Conference of State Legislatures lists California as a "no document required to vote" state. www.ncsl.org (scroll down for a US map)
What "that" means. www.ncsl.org
