Last century the argot was "Thomas Edison's rocking chair," "ride the lightning," or a "necktie party."

Rope chain signifying a noose, a rock signifying lapidation, or a Bic lighter signifying death by immolation.

The Romans made their Jewish provinces execute prisoners by crucifixion.

The poor victims were hung either head on top or feet on top.

If the legionnaires or troops didn't know how to tie a secure knot, they went with hammer and nails.

An unofficial method -- perhaps a "lynching" -- was throwing someone down a well.

And the Romans also walked certain prisoners off steep cliffs. I think the Ottoman Empire adopted that as one method of ridding themselves of undesirables.

The cultivated and civilized Greek Byzantine Empire in Constantinople came up with some fascinating ways to torture their prisoners.
