The reason that the US hasn't left the area to its madness, I am sure, is because enough money has been distributed to those in power, including both parties in Congress, to keep American power killing for...not sure what or who, to be truthful.

This country has engaged in a lot of killing over the years. Although many reflexively push unpleasantries aside, some folks remain keenly aware of the more dramatic episodes - those characterized by lots of noise and blood, and for which the stated reasons often turned out to be utterly bogus. Far fewer Americans know of more discrete behaviors - e.g., chopper pilots ferrying hitmen with death lists off into the backcountry of backwater countries - carried out in their name.

And when it comes to the Why Question? I'm not sure, but almost certainly nothing even remotely positive.
