Dearborn Ramadan Displays Spark Federal Lawsuit

The complaint accuses Mayor Abdullah Hammoud and the city of violating the Establishment Clause, which prohibits the government from favoring one religion over another, as well as Cleveland's free speech and equal protection rights. According to the complaint, the city spent $1,500 on "Ramadan Kareem" banners and $5,000 on a lighted crescent moon in Peace Park last year. It also alleges the Dearborn Police Department sold Ramadan-themed T-shirts while Cleveland's emails seeking comparable recognition for Easter and Passover went unanswered.

Every posting of the Ten Commandments in a school room violates the Establishment Clause.

If you fascists want to go back to a strict division of religion and state, I'm all for it.

But no. You want the right to advertize your favorite hamburger over those hamburgers you don't like as much.

For perspective's sake:

[T]he city has spent substantially more money on Christmas and holiday-related decorations and programming than it has on Ramadan displays.

Records reviewed by TCD News show Dearborn spent nearly $300,000 on Christmas and holiday-related items in a single year, compared with approximately $6,860 spent on Ramadan-related decorations over several years.

That means the amount spent on Christmas and holiday-related items was more than 40 times the amount spent on Ramadan decorations.
The city has also publicly hosted and promoted Christmas events. Dearborn's official 2025 holiday schedule included a Christmas tree lighting, Victorian Christmas Open House, Jingle Bell Bash, holiday performances and Skate with Santa, among other events.

Dearborn also installed a 32-foot Christmas tree at PEACE Park West in 2025 and held an official tree-lighting ceremony featuring thousands of lights, entertainment, food and other activities.

The spending figures obtained by TCD News provide additional context to a federal lawsuit filed Sept. 17 by Dearborn resident Margot Cleveland against the City of Dearborn and Mayor Abdullah Hammoud.
