... President Donald Trump's boast that oil and gas extraction would be coming soon to "our new" Greenland was quickly shot down by one of the Danish territory's top officials in charge of mining.
Greenland's deputy mining minister Jrgen Hammeken-Holm told CNN on Wednesday that while "there are activities by US companies" in Greenland, "we are very far away from massive' exploration."
"There are many smaller explorations underway but these could take years to become operational," Hammeken-Holm explained.
The comments came the morning after Trump posted to Truth Social, writing, "Massive Oil, Gas, and Mineral Exploration is getting ready to begin in our new and beautiful Greenland!"
"There are Experts that are saying that the amount of easily available Oil is far greater than that of almost any land, anywhere in the World and, even more importantly, from a Security Purpose in the Defense and Offense of both the United States of America, and Europe, is second to none. Any future attack on the United States will have to come across Greenland, where our Defense will routinely knock down drones, missiles, or any other form of weapon not yet even conceived. It gives us time, location, and sightline, like nowhere else in the World! Thank you for your attention to this matter," concluded Trump.
Trump has been working overtime in recent weeks to try reassure energy markets and bring down oil and gas prices amid the ongoing war in Iran, ahead of the midterms. The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve is at its lowest level since October of 1982 as energy industry leaders warn of rationing if supply routes are not quickly reestablished.
Trump sparked widespread controversy earlier in the month by lifting sanctions on Russia to import diesel amid soaring prices.
CNN's Jessie Yeung also noted that Hammeken-Holm's comments echoed "researchers who have pointed out the difficulties and enormous expense involved in extracting resources from Greenland."
"Many of the island's deposits are located in remote areas above the Arctic Circle, where there is a mile-thick polar ice sheet and little infrastructure. Approximately 80% of the island is covered in ice," concluded Yeung of the difficulties of extracting oil and gas from Greenland. ...
