The progress of a human being through life might be thought of as a mostly gradual succession of changes from the ovum to the grave. But if you wake up one morning, look in the mirror, and wonder when you suddenly grew so much older, you may not be imagining things. read more

@#20 ... a twist ...

S.C. town's former police chief takes new job after he, entire force resign
www.wmbfnews.com

... The former police chief of a South Carolina town now without a police force has a new job.

Records from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy state former McColl Police Chief Bob Hale is now an officer with the Bennettsville Police Department.

Those records, obtained Tuesday by WMBF News, state his first day with the department was on Monday.

Bennettville Police Chief Kevin Miller told WMBF News on Tuesday that Hale was hired as the department's new first sergeant of training. Miller added that Hale interviewed for the job more than a month ago.

"We did not conduct this process any different from any other hire we've made for the department," said Miller.

Hale resigned as police chief in McColl just over a year after taking over the role. All four of the town's other officers followed suit.

In a public statement, Hale accused McColl leaders of creating a "hostile work environment" and making cuts to department funding. A now-former police investigator with the town also backed up those claims when speaking with WMBF News last week.

McColl Mayor George Garner did not comment on the allegations but said the town would carry on in the officers' absence. ...

Biden administration finalizes nearly $8B in CHIPS funding for Intel
thehill.com

... ntel will receive about $7.86 billion in funding from the CHIPS and Science Act to build new semiconductor manufacturing facilities across four states under its finalized agreement with the Biden administration.

The final award is over $600 million less than the $8.5 billion initially announced in March, after the chipmaker received a separate $3 billion contract with the government in September.

"The CHIPS for America program will supercharge American innovation and technology and make our country more secure " and Intel is playing an important role in the revitalization of the U.S. semiconductor industry through its unprecedented investments across Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio, and Oregon," Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said in a statement. ...

... The Pentagon-funded report to which Hegseth referred said there was no evidence the number of violent extremists in the military was "disproportionate to extremists in the general population."

"They knew this was a sham," Hegseth said, referring to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and other military leaders. "Then they do the study, which confirms what we all know."

Hegseth, who was working for Fox News at the time and had no involvement in the report, wasn't alone. The Wall Street Journal's opinion page highlighted the same report as evidence that extremists in military communities were "phantoms" created by a "false media narrative." The X account for Republicans on the House Armed Services Committee posted that the study showed the focus on extremism in the military was a "witch hunt."

But The Associated Press has found that the study, "Prohibited Extremist Activities in the U.S. Department of Defense" conducted by the Institute for Defense Analyses, relied on old data, misleading analyses and ignored evidence that pointed to the opposite conclusion.

In fact, the AP found that the IDA report's authors did not use newer data that was offered to it, and instead based one of its foundational conclusions on Jan. 6 arrest figures that were more than two years out of date by the time of the report's public release.

As a result, the report grossly undercounted the number of military and veterans arrested for the Jan. 6 attack and provided a misleading picture of the severity of the growing problem, the AP has found. ...

Here's who Trump has picked as Cabinet members and key advisers

"This engagement allows our intended cabinet nominees to begin critical preparations, including the deployment of landing teams to every department and agency, and complete the orderly transition of power," Susie Wiles, chief of staff to President-elect Donald Trump, said in a statement on Tuesday.

The memorandum of understanding was supposed to have been signed by Oct. 1 " along with a second MOU with the General Services Administration (GSA) that would provide funding, office space and technology. The deadline and process is set out in a law called the Presidential Transition Act.

The transition team said it has ruled out signing the GSA agreement, saying it would use "an existing ethics plan" for its team, and would post it on the GSA website.

"The transition already has existing security and information protections built in, which means we will not require additional government and bureaucratic oversight," the Trump transition team said in a statement, noting it would disclose its donors publicly. ...
