Harris: 1 million forgivable loans to Black entrepreneurs

Vice President Kamala Harris unveiled an "Opportunity Agenda" proposal for Black men Monday, which includes plans to provide 1 million forgivable loans to Black entrepreneurs and new pathways to help Black Americans succeed in the legalized marijuana industry

Wow, and here I thought her family stopped buying black people generations ago. I guess some habits are hard to break.

The ole democrat playbook. Try and buy votes.

By that measure, every single campaign promise to address voter's needs and desires is an attempt to "buy votes."

Vote for me and I'll give you a corporate tax cut and lower capital gains rates. Vote for me and I'll make your car loan interest deductible. Vote for me and I'll remove income taxes on tipped wages. Vote for me and I'll reinstitute the SALT deduction. Vote for me and I'll lower gasoline prices. Vote for me and I'll cut regulations so that you corporations can make higher profits.

Most panders are direct attempts to sway voters by giving them something in return. GASP... you've uncovered the frightful truth about politics and policy.

I'm all for politicians who promise such things if they are being sincere. If they are promising something they know is impossible to get passed then it's stupid and those voters deserve what they get (or not get)

And I'm all for this program Harris has announced if she's being sincere about it's chances.

1 million forgivable loans to Black entrepreneurs and new pathways to help Black Americans succeed in the legalized marijuana industry

So her idea is to stereotype them? Simply offer free stuff for weed?

Who the hell is running her campaign. Jesus, it's worse than I thought it would be...

#13 | Posted by jpw at 2024-10-16 09:32 AM

Exactly. Not to finish college and go teach or something like that.

But instead ... ... weed.

I can imagine the reaction to this if Trump announced this.

LOL

#14 | Posted by eberly at 2024-10-16 09:36 AM

But instead ... ... weed.

It's an emerging LEGAL multi-billion dollar industry that excludes - by law - former users of the product before it became legal, that all studies show were 4 times more likely to face legal repercussions than whites who make up the majority of marijuana users.

Generational wealth is being realized through the legal sale of cannabis products all over America. The focus on this issue is as germane as focus on any other legal industry pioneered by entrepreneurism when an aggrieved community is barred from opportunity because of prior interaction with an acknowledged biased legal system originally instituted to punish blacks and Vietnam War protesters:

The War on Drugs, according to John Ehrlichman, Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs under President Richard Nixon, began as a war against antiwar advocates and Black people. By Ehrlichman's own admission, the Nixon administration could not criminalize being Black or being against the Vietnam War, so instead it sought to disrupt these communities by getting the public to associate heroin with Black people and marijuana with "hippies" - and then heavily criminalizing them. Those lies ruined lives and fueled the acceleration of mass incarceration in the United States.

God forbid some of you read the article:

The plan outlined Monday would provide 1 million fully forgivable loans of up to $20,000 to Black entrepreneurs and others to start a business. The loans would be financed through partnerships between "mission-driven lenders," community oriented banks and the Small Business Administration, the campaign said.

The agenda also includes training and mentorship programs to help Black men get jobs in high-demand industries, and greater investments in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program to recruit and retain Black male teachers....

The PSLF program provides student loan forgiveness after 10 years to borrowers who work in certain nonprofit and government jobs. Black men make up less than 2% of public school teachers in the U.S., according to the findings of the National Teacher and Principal Survey for the 2020-21 school year.

Harris also promised she would support federal-level marijuana legalization, a major step beyond the Biden administration's current stance on cannabis, which includes pardoning people convicted of marijuana possession and exploring a potential reclassification of marijuana on the drug schedule.

Harris "will break down unjust legal barriers that hold Black men and other Americans back by legalizing marijuana nationally, working with Congress to ensure that the safe cultivation, distribution, and possession of recreational marijuana is the law of the land," according to a Harris campaign statement.

I think it's ironic that she was notorious for maximum sentences for weed possession by black men and bragged about all of the free prison labor she generated as a result. Since she campaigns on her record as a prosecutor she deserves to have her record highlighted warts and all.

"I think it's ironic that she was notorious for maximum sentences for weed possession by black men"

That's not what my research shows:

Harris' Record Proves She Is a Champion of Effective Drug Policies and Marijuana Reform

The majority of marijuana cases prosecuted under Harris occurred during her role as the district attorney for San Francisco from 2004 to 2010. While her office prosecuted slightly more than 1,900 marijuana convictions during this time, most were downgraded to misdemeanor charges, if even charged at all, and very few were actually sent to state prison. In fact, as district attorney, Harris championed a policy that people should not serve jail time for a marijuana conviction, and her office often embraced alternative measures such as drug treatment programs for individuals with low-level convictions. Harris even launched the Back on Track reentry court program in 2005, which "aimed [to reduce] recidivism among low-level drug-trafficking defendants" and ultimately became a national model for other prosecutors. The program saw a less than 10 percent recidivism rate among its participants within a two-year period"a significant improvement over the general 53 percent recidivism rate among all individuals in California convicted of a drug offense during this same period.

In her role as California's attorney general from 2011 to 2017, Harris focused her resources on prosecuting more serious transnational and interstate drug trafficking organizations and was not responsible for prosecuting low-level marijuana offenses across the state, contrary to what Gabbard and others have claimed.

JFC, if you dumbfuqs think the optics of giving free money to people to open pot shops...then keep stumping for it. You're crazy.

I can't believe what partisanship does to people.

I know Trump supporters amaze me all the time but it's not all on 1 side of the fence.

and this is an example of it.

If Harris would give free money to people who want to invest into meth labs......you fine with that as well?

There can't possibly be an upside to this during a campaign.

The plan includes a list of different proposals. One proposal is the 1 million forgivable loans to black entrepereneurs. Another proposal is to make sure black men get to participate in the canabis industry. You are conflating the two different proposals.

the current article. it changed which is why JPW posted that quote.

and the point is the optics of this which is exactly where it went. Giving blacks money to open pot shops.

There was no upside to this.....and I want to her to win. Not lose.

What do you want?

Here is what the article says about the proposals:

The plan outlined Monday would provide 1 million fully forgivable loans of up to $20,000 to Black entrepreneurs and others to start a business. The loans would be financed through partnerships between "mission-driven lenders," community oriented banks and the Small Business Administration, the campaign said.

"She will also fight to ensure that as the national cannabis industry takes shape, Black men " who have, for years, been over policed for marijuana use " are able to access wealth and jobs in this new market," the campaign said.

Harris' new plan also contains a few lines about digital assets, another area where she appears poised to break ranks with the Biden administration.

According to her campaign, Harris "knows that more than 20% of Black Americans own or have owned cryptocurrency assets, which is why her plans will make sure owners of and investors in digital assets benefit from a regulatory framework so that Black men and others who participate in this market are protected."

It was not clear Monday what that framework would look like, but a fierce battle over cryptocurrency regulation is well underway in Washington.

What about hispanics, or gays, or gay hispanics or gay hispanic women or muslims, etc.??

Blacks?

This is so stupid. It is a slow pitch beach ball to be clobbered by the opposition.

#33 | Posted by eberly at 2024-10-16 11:13 PM

One aspect of these conversations that I am curious about ...

For decades, many decades, white men actively discriminated against Black men in the corporate world and elsewhere, not basing decisions upon capability, but skin color...

And, for now, I won't even go into the discrimination against women.

So, now that the shoe seems to be on the other foot, and Blacks seem to be considered for corporate jobs, the Republican White Christians are complaining?

Trump wants to cut taxes for billionaires again, ballooning the deficit yet again in the process, while also doubling down on tariffs, after having spent $28 billion of taxpayer money during his previous adminstration to compensate farmers hurt by his earlier tariffs, and you are bitching about 1 million $20,000 forgivable loans to help black entreperneurs? Got it.

such a drama queen. I agree with all of that but you're being naive about how it works. Those issues are fine to hammer Trump with but why serve up this stupid issue to be hammered by the opposition?

in exchange for what? votes from a demographic you'll get 95% of that demographic?

dumb.

I assume she is offering up these proposals because they will help members in the black community, who might not otherwise be able to do so, start a small business and begin to establish intergenerational wealth in the process.

And that sounds great after she wins.

But now it's just a campaign issue with no upside with a bullseye to get hammered with.

And I actually want her to win.

You? not so sure......

I think it would be good if she proposed similiar plans for the working class in Appalachia, who are mostly white, for example, and not just for black entrepeneurs. Most of them would probably be too suspicious to take the money though, especially if the program it came from had Harris' name attached to it (think Obamacare vs the ACA or people in the mountains of WNC when it comes to accepting help from FEMA under Biden's presidency).
