That aside, I do not know what happens if I "plonk" an alias.

Do the message numbers change?

If the message numbers before plonking were 1 ... 2 ... 3 ... 4 ... 5

And I plonked the alias that submitted the #3 comment, does the #4 comment now become #3?

I figured out the whole "kill file" thing.

I put an alias I respect into the kill file. And when I visited the threads, the numbers were no longer sequential, but skipped the numbers of the posts that the kill-file alias had posted.

So, my conclusion is that if an alias in in your kill-file, the message numbers of the thread do not change. You may see missing message numbers.

OK, going back to the cause of all this effort ...
