GOP Lawmakers (Privately) Oppose Trump Tariffs

It is a tough spot for these Republican lawmakers to be in. Criticism of the president's policies could earn a public rebuke from the White House. But embracing the new duties could be politically risky: Voters disapprove of the president's handling of the economy, inflation, and tariffs, according to recent polling by The Wall Street Journal.

Comments

If they were being honest with themselves, they would oppose a lot of what Trump is doing. But it's too late. They hitched their cart to this festering horse and now we're all stuck with it.

But many of us will remember the depths to which the GOP was willing to go to hold on to power.

... It is a tough spot for these Republican lawmakers to be in. ...

If they find themselves in a tough spot, perhaps it is a tough spot of their own making?

Are there any democrats that consider these cowards friends? I would hope not. How could you have as a friend someone that is willing to sit idly by and allow the country to be ruined? I think the private disgust that many republicans feign is just a ruse; they're really ok with everything Trump is doing.

Who gives a shht what they do in private if they're going to agree with everything Trump wants when it comes time to vote.

It's funny because his response to being called a Nazi is to call you a crybaby.

The whole power dynamic is right there to see.

"It is a tough spot for these Republican lawmakers to be in."

Presidents are rarely the most popular member of their party.

Obama, Clinton, Biden, etc...all had members of their party who disagreed with them. Same with the GOP.

IOW...the "tough spot" is part of the job. Always has been.

Of course.

They're meaningless cucks if they won't do anything about it.

They are as useless as a screendoor on a submarine.

There are still democrats in Congress that still think the old rules apply. That they can be friends even though they have differences in policies.

Those days are gone.

The GQP have been playing scorched earth politics for the last decade.

It's time the democrats wake up to this reality.

"There are still democrats in Congress that still think the old rules apply."

There's still Republicans like that too.

In fact, the entire premise of the takeover is that this is normal and the old rules still apply.

Much like the Nazi seizure of power was completely legal, so too, Republicans will tell you the ongoing Republican seizure of power is completely legal, within the purview of Executive power, and so on.

The only change will be that arrest will be the punishment for disagreeing with Trump. just like in Russia; it's a ticket to Siberia! These stupid Fascists (Republicans) are enabling a dictator but they are too cowardly to voice any objection! Very sad!
