But embracing the new duties could be politically risky: Voters disapprove of the president's handling of the economy, inflation, and tariffs, according to recent polling by The Wall Street Journal.

If they were being honest with themselves, they would oppose a lot of what Trump is doing. But it's too late. They hitched their cart to this festering horse and now we're all stuck with it.

But many of us will remember the depths to which the GOP was willing to go to hold on to power.
