Gold Trump Coin Plan Continues

The United States Department of the Treasury has taken a big step forward in a plan to etch President Donald Trump's portrait on a 24 karat gold commemorative coin.

A Trump-appointed federal arts commission has approved the design of a 24-carat gold commemorative coin bearing his image, officials said on Thursday.

More coins in Trump's likeness planned

The US Commission of Fine Arts, whose all six members were fired last October and replaced with hand-picked people by Trump, approved the design unanimously.

Trump's Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is now expected to order the coin to be minted.

The coin will not circulate as currency, and likely be part of a limited collector series.

Two other coins bearing the US president's image are planned, including a $1 piece that would be in circulation and a one-ounce gold one. ...

If we are going to toss out the Constitution by allowing someone who attempted to overthrow it and let that person unilaterally declare wars like a king then we might as well start putting him on money. That is what monarchies do.

Gold coins? So novelty/collectors items?

Gold Coins will never be put into circulation and used as legal tender.

If you tried to circulate them the edges will be scraped and trimmed and collected for profit or they will be melted down and sold.

In addition using gold for small transactions is difficult, as physical coins require dividing, weighing, and verifying authenticity.

Another wasteful government boondoggle.

A 24 kt 5 oz gold coin would be $23,000 just for the metal. I assume the plan is to just make one for him?
