Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, March 17, 2024

Over the past 15 years or so, however, AI systems that work entirely in software have grown far more sophisticated than their moving counterparts.

... A startup called Physical Intelligence has set out to alter this situation. Formed this year by a team of robotics and AI experts, the company plans to create software that can add high-level intelligence to a wide variety of robots and machines.

Or, as co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Karol Hausman puts it in Physical Intelligence's first public interview since founding the company: "We aim to bring AI to the physical world with a universal model that can power any robot or any physical device basically for any application." ...

Why Artificial Intelligence Matters in Robotic Technology
roboticsandautomationnews.com

... Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a groundbreaking force in a plethora of sectors, including transportation, healthcare, finance, and agriculture.

In the realm of robotics, AI is redefining the landscape, as well as human-machine interaction. Andrew Crackett, managing director of Yaskawa, provides some insight into the role of AI in robotics technology, its advantages, challenges, and makes his predictions on what is to come in the future.

The speed at which AI is being integrated into our rapidly advancing digital world makes it imperative for all industries to welcome its adoption, which is especially true for robotics.

Crackett praises artificial intelligence as "the cognitive powerhouse behind the physical capabilities of robots, influencing everything from design and functionality to adaptability in diverse environments".

AI provides robots with unmatched precision and efficiency, optimising actions through machine learning algorithms for enhanced productivity and accuracy. ...

Ohhhh... this ain't gonna end up in a happy place for humans.

On the other hand, I still await the video of a robot being tossed a crumpled t-shirt, and the robot then puts the t-shirt on correctly.

So far, the robots seem to have issues with determining whether the crumpled t-shirt is inside-out or not.

But...

When that level of achievement is attained by robots, i.e., putting on a random t-shirt, oh we humans are screwed, we are so screwed.

Keep in mind it is Big Tech that is bringing us this robot and AI technology.

That should be your first warning flare.

Build one that can hump the incels and neckbeards and you'll be richer than Croesus.

People who dismiss AI seem like they must be dumb to me.

There's no way a person can read and understand every book. AI can at least read them all; understanding is a bit harder to claim but go ask ChatGPT about things and it's probably not far off the mark.

That is what Big Tech seems to have been relying upon for the past couple three decades.

People who do not understand what they are faced with.

As a prior proponent of technology (back in the 70's, 80's) I find the current exploitive focus of Big Tech to be quite detrimental.

Well, training an AI requires a whole lot of information, much of it is probably subject to copyright or other IP restrictions.

Recent Hollywood strike was just the beginning of where this is headed.

Generative AI Lawsuits Timeline: Legal Cases vs. OpenAI, Microsoft, Anthropic, Nvidia and More
sustainabletechpartner.com

... Some media companies and content producers have filed lawsuits against Generative AI (artificial intelligence) software companies such as OpenAI (maker of ChatGPT), Microsoft, Anthropic, Midjourney, Stability AI and DeviantArt, and chip giant Nvidia.

Many of the lawsuits involve alleged copyright infringement. In short, the complaints often claim that AI companies illegally train various large language models (LLMs) on copyrighted content from media companies. ...

No, they aren't.

They're building a sophisticated database management software with an integrated search algorithm designed by a heuristic antagonistic algorithm on custom computer hardware. A computer is not a brain. Your brain is not a computer. They do not do the same things. They cannot be made to do the same things. Any attempt to make them do the same things reveals very quickly why that is a stupid idea.

It's important to realize two things. First, that reading a book and performing a complex algorithm transformation on the symbolic text of a book are two entirely different things. Second, "AI" can only do the latter of those. A computer can't do semantic analysis of a text, so it can't read. It's only sloppy use of language (Hey! Semantics again!) that allows people to claim that it can.

ChatGPT is in fact wildly off the mark, constantly. ChatGPT is a -------- engine. Just like every other large language model; and in fact like small language models as well. It generates text that is superficially similar to something that seems legit to your average human. If you have it write on a subject in which you have any amount of experience or expertise, you quickly come to find that what it's spitting out bears no resemblance to reality. Something that is superficially convincing to laity but obviously wrong to the knowledgeable is the very definition of --------.

Finally a company building a brain for robots. Can we transplant that to some over the top dumb ass republicans that come on here when they are finished? Seriously though, do we really need all these robots? That movie Terminator is coming true. War with robot ships, jets and ships is already starting to happen. We need to really think this ---- out. Of course, Russia, Iran, North Korea and China are all in for this world of robot terror and have no wish to make any treaties to keep this stuff under control. So basically we either ante up and develop our robot warriors or let them conquer us.
