Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The 2024 Global E-waste Monitor (GEM) [PDF] was prepared by the UN's International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). The report reveals that annual generation of e-waste -- discarded devices with a plug or battery -- is growing at a rate of 2.6 million metric tons per year (a metric ton is equivalent to roughly 2,204.62 pounds -- all units in this story are metric) and is expected to reach 82 million tons by 2030, from 62 million tons in 2022. Those 62 million tons, the report suggests, would fill 1.55 million 40-ton trucks, which would roughly encircle the equator -- if you parked them end-to-end and paved the relevant oceans. And that's to say nothing of the economic consequences of taking so many trucks out of service and disrupting global shipping routes with an equatorial parking structure, so let's not.

Green-er.

And it sounds like we just need more recycling places.

We done here?

" Green-er"

If we only measure post production CO2 output.

It would be bad for the economy if we stopped creating all this e-waste.

EV's are hardly "the good."

. EVs are much better for the climate than gas-powered cars.
It's not even close. Over its lifetime, the average new electric vehicle produces about half the greenhouse gas emissions of an equivalent vehicle burning gasoline or diesel. This calculation from the Union of Concerned Scientists compares total emissions from gas and electric vehicles:

Are EV Batteries Recyclable?
Instead of trashing the batteries, auto recyclers (the businesses formerly known as junkyards) send them to specialist firms that dismantle the packs and break them down into their different materials: wires, circuitry, plastics, the actual cells. The cells and circuits are crushed to separate and purify the various metals in them, including nickel and lithium.

The first one didn't survive peer review. Current EV owners don't drive enough to make back up the carbon debt and the battery is swapped and the debt accumulates, and it doesn't include the increase in non-exhaust particulate emissions from the heavier weights of the EVs the US consumers purchase, made even worse by people using their higher than average torque and going through tire sets much faster.

Unfortunately the US audience is not interested in much lighter, short range EVs popular in other countries with horsepower taxes.

#10 I would consider a glorified golf cart like the first gen Nissan Leaf for grocery store runs and such around town. 50 miles roundtrip is plenty for that. But I'd still keep my regular car.

Who said anything about just EVs? The article is about electronic waste in general.

You know, jeff is right, nothing can be done.

Happy Extinction!!!!!!!!!!!!

EV batteries are much larger than cell phone batteries and Biden is attempting an end around Congress by having the EPA mandate EV production with a new "rule."

I was wondering the same thing.
