President Joe Biden will double, triple and quadruple tariffs on some Chinese goods this week, unveiling the measures at a White House event framed as a defense of American workers, people familiar with the matter say. Biden will hike or add tariffs in key sectors after nearly two years of review. The total tariff on Chinese electric vehicles will rise to 102.5% from 27.5%, the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity ahead of the announcement. Others will double or triple in targeted industries, though the scope remains unclear.

The announcement is the culmination of a review of tariffs first imposed by Trump. ... He warned that Chinese companies will try to build cars in Mexico, then avoid tariffs by shipping them to the US under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which Trump agreed to as president. Trump said he'd put a 200% tariff on Chinese-made cars in Mexico.

"He says he's going to put a 100% tariff on all Chinese electric vehicles. Isn't that nice?" Trump said. "Biden should have done this four years ago."

Oh so there's not really much of a meaningful difference between the parties.

Are there any Chinese car manufacturers currently selling vehicles in the US? I don't believe I've ever heard of any doing so. This sounds to me like the same old fear mongering we've heard about Japanese and Korean car makers in the past.

A move so bold that this administration has to hide to say it.

It'll be brought to you by the Easter Bunny...

I first read that as "cheese tariffs" and was about to get annoyed.

About time. While sure, I'd like to have a cheaper electric car, there's no way I want one from mainland China. All those jokes about electric cars catching on fire? Yeah, the mainland China ones actually do.

I suppose tariffs are all he can do, but it really should be a total ban.

It doesn't matter, you have to protect American Industry/
Jobs to some degree. The Big Three US autos are already
teetering towards their next bankruptcy. This would stick
a nail in them, as well as the Reich's darling stepchild
Tesla. These sorts of 'shots across the bow' of China,
are meant to signal to China, that we are aware you are trying
to sink American Industry by offloading cheap goods (car dumping)
into American Markets. Reset your prices, or we will do it for
you (via tariffs), and come back when you have a competitive
auto at a competitive price that our industry can compete with.

You cannot just let foreign companies dump uber-cheap product unhindered
into US markets. That's how US markets sink. That is how they fail.

China 'protects the hell out of their markets'.
We should at least protect ours some.

Now if China were to re-offer their 9k EV vehicle at
say 15k, they'd probably be let in the door.

To debate commerce, you first have to know how it works...
And sadly, many no longer know.

Any nation has the right to defend itself from utterly
unfair competition. The US is doing the right thing
by sending this warning shot to Xi and China.

Trump doesn't get the basics. He thinks his tariffs are being paid by China. Any freshman econ student could tell you that the American people are paying his tariffs.

Biden Imposes Tariffs on Chinese Chips, Critical Minerals, EVs
www.bnnbloomberg.ca

... President Joe Biden unveiled sweeping tariff hikes on a range of Chinese imports, in an election-year bid to bolster domestic manufacturing in critical industries.

The US president cast the move as a necessary action to protect US workers and businesses from companies that he accused of stealing, cheating and dumping underpriced goods into international markets.

Biden is raising levies on semiconductors, batteries, solar cells, and critical minerals, in addition to previously reported increases on steel, aluminum and electric vehicles. The changes are projected to affect around $18 billion in current annual imports, the White House said.

"When you make tactics like this, you're not competing, it's not competition, it's cheating. And we've seen damage here in America," Biden said Tuesday at a White House Rose Garden event.

The moves represent Biden's most comprehensive update to China tariffs first imposed by his predecessor, former President Donald Trump, and a recognition that a hawkish approach to trade with Beijing remains popular with US voters. None of Trump's tariffs will be reduced. Biden will ratchet up rates on goods the US struggled to import during the coronavirus pandemic, and for industries, like chips and green energy, that he's sought to bolster since he took office.

"The Chinese government has poured state money into Chinese companies," Biden said. "China heavily subsidized all these products, pushing Chinese companies to produce far more than the world can absorb and then dumping excess products on the market at unfairly low prices."

Biden must strike a careful balance. Additional tariffs risk increasing prices for consumers already hurting from inflation, and inspiring the ire of China. ...

Stepping in, obviously, it's mostly the same stuff. If it was bad that Trump did it, but good that Biden did it, it was probably okay in the first place that Trump did it, or it was never okay. The only thing consistent is the inconsistency of politics.

Go to China Effete, they have plenty of cheap ----- there. Cheap highway construction, cheap bridges that collapse every spring, cheap tofu dredge highrise apartements and condos that have winds blow the outter layers off of them every hurricane season. A total lack of sewers, their major cities flood every rainy season! Such a brilliant and industrious people. They have 100's of millions of dollars of overbuilt empty housing units that are falling apart all over their country! All of this can be readily seen on Youtube, any time you want in America. You know why? Because we have freedom of information here. Something else China doesn't have. Yes, yes. Go back to China Effete, it's SO great there...
