Most of the nation might have just learned of the existence of Tim Walz, but Sam Hurd has known the vice presidential candidate for nearly two decades " since Walz was Hurd's junior year geography teacher at Mankato West High School from 2005-2006.

In an interview, Hurd recalled that Walz didn't overload students with homework, but challenged them in other ways " forcing them to wrestle with issues like the Cambodian genocide and how the French government treated its Muslim citizens.

And Walz was never sitting, always circling the room.

"Wearing a tie and sweating profusely and just working his ass off as a teacher," is how Hurd remembered him.

"Passionate and service-oriented. I think those are the two things that pop for me."

Great read about a man who's lived his live in service to others, not to himself.

Better than my social studies teacher. We watched game fill on Thursdays and had quiet time on Fridays during Football season.
Rest of the year we watch at least two movies a week.

My worst was a retirement age history teacher whose "teaching" was reading the textbook day after day.

Half the class napped as soon as he started to read.

My social studies teacher was a smoking hot late 20's woman who wore tight dresses. All of us guys couldn't take our eyes off of her.

The last couple of weeks of fifth grade were spent helping Moss Welch, the teacher - a big, tall gal with a booming voice, winningsmile, and terrific attitude who really liked kids - prepare for her annual pilgrimage from Southern CA to Hawaii, where she'd lose herself for the summer. During prep time we learned about and how to hula and sing the hukilau song:

A huki huki huki huki hukilau
Everybody loves the hukilau
Where the laulau is the kaukau at the luau
We throw our nets out into the sea
And all the amaama come a swimming to me
Oh, we're going to a hukilau
A huki huki huki hukilau

Thank you, Ms. Welch!

Had the same history teacher in 8th and 12th grades. In 8th grade we watched the Watergate hearings and he read us New York Times columnists. By 12th grade, he didn't care if seniors showed up to class thirty minutes late. The day before midterms and finals, he'd tell us all the questions. Serious education happening.

Doc, my mother had that album. If I remember correctly, it included printed instructions on how to hula. She used it to teach my girl scout troop.
