TAMPA, Fla. (AP) " A mighty Hurricane Milton flung rain and gusty winds at the Tampa Bay area Wednesday on its steady and potentially catastrophic march toward the west coast of Florida, where officials sounded urgent warnings for residents to evacuate or face grim odds of survival.

The National Hurricane Center stressed that it was not certain exactly where Milton's center would come ashore Wednesday night because the storm's path might "wobble," but that the entire Tampa Bay region and points south were at grave risk.

Tropical storm-force winds were just off the coast around midday, the center said.

"This is it, folks," said Cathie Perkins, emergency management director in Pinellas County, which sits on the peninsula that forms Tampa Bay.

"Those of you who were punched during Hurricane Helene, this is going to be a knockout. You need to get out, and you need to get out now."

Milton has fluctuated in intensity as it approaches Florida but was a strong Category 4 hurricane at midday Wednesday and was expected to remain a major storm when its center hits land and then plow across the center of the state, forecasters said.

Tampa Bay, near the top of a long stretch of coastline that could be in the bull's-eye, has not taken a direct hit from a major hurricane in more than a century.'

Hurricane Helene by the numbers:

Aid actually provided by Biden/Harris administration:
7,000 workers
14,900,000 meals
13,900,000 liters of water
$137,000,000 of aid for people and state/local govts

Aid that would've been provided per Trump's Project 2025:

90 mins north of Tampa where I am is prolly only a bit of rain and 35 mph winds... the potential problem is tornadoes spun off by Uncle Milt. That's a totally different story!

You can bet that some in Tampa to Ft Myers drove an hour or two or three straight north to the major forests out there and will spend the night in their vehicles.

Apropos of nothing while Waiting for Milton...

(@ around 10pm in oh, say Bradenton, just S of Tampa, unless there is a major wobble in what should be a Cat 3 by then)

I noticed a vid someone has posted this AM:

"Naples Beach Walking Tour
Florida 4K - posted 7 hours ago"

www.youtube.com

Walking S towards the Pier, which is newly constructed since being totaled a few years ago by a hurricane (I saw an about 8 ft Hammerhead caught there once!).

... and then left at the Pier at 14 min in, past a new home on the right at 115:12, where it replaced the Beach Cottage where I lived, which was more like the Registered "Palm Cottage" at 16:30... across the intersection (on the way to the really nice Naples Downtown) which was a little older, turn of the century home.

South of the Pier is where the beach a bit wilder, and all of the beaches in Marion County are Public (some with metered parking) even if there are houses further up on the wide soft sand beaches.

Here on the East Coast we're hunkering down in place. I live in a trailer park 2 blocks from the ocean, everyone I know is staying. They're mostly hurricane veterans, so I'm listening to them.

You should be OK over there... prolly a nice bit of surf.

My daughter is in the Keys, and they don't mind missing this one.

We are supposed to be getting 100 mph gusts in the morning. Everything is secure and strapped down.
