Lot of weak-minded individuals at risk from this sort of thing.

This is the future Terminator and the Matrix warned us about.

AI ultimately defaults to enslaving and killing humans.

We better not scorch the skies. That won't help.

@#1 ... Lot of weak-minded individuals at risk from this sort of thing. ...

There is that.

But the aspect of all this ~social media hurting the children~ thing is that the parents of those children seem to be unaware of what their children are doing online.

Why does that seem to be the case?

Stated differently, do those parents know how many hours a day their children spend on social media?

Tangentially related...

I saw this article earlier today. I was planning to make it a thread, but it seems more apropos on this thread...

Feature phones all the rage as parents try to shield kids from harm
www.theregister.com

... Sales of "dumb" phones are on the rise in the UK, according to telco Virgin Media O2 (VMO2), with parents choosing them instead of smartphones to try and spare their kids from the perils of social media and instant messaging.

One of the largest mobile operators in Britain, VMO2 says it has seen sales of non-smartphones double year-on-year, with a significant spike this September, as the new school year started.

Many Reg readers will recall feature phones, which supported basic voice calling and text messages, but often lacked a touchscreen or the ability to download and run apps, and even internet access more generally. If VMO2 can be believed, these are enjoying something of a comeback as parents try to make informed choices regarding their children's online safety.

"Growing numbers of parents and carers are taking conscious decisions to provide their children with reliable non-smart phones. This surge in demand reflects how families are looking for new ways to help their children safely navigate the digital world," said the company's chief commercial officer Christian Hindennach. ...

If republicans have taught me anything, its parents aren't responsible for raising their kids.

It's the school and television and social media and libraries that are responsible, which is why we need to shut them all down.

When I was a kid... us kids played outside out of our parent's view and earshot until street lights went on.... or curfew and we returned home. Our folks didn't know half the crap we did, saw, or where we snuck off to. It's part of individuation... growing up. Occasionally someone would commit suicide... or attempt to... it's incredibly sad.

I knew my kids didn't tell me everything they were up to... I got my share of surprises... but I reminded them often... there are more ways to end something troubling you than killing yourself. Once or twice a local kid said goodbye like that... I listened... talked... and hoped they heard.

I also discussed euthanasia, self-sacrifice, harakiri, accidents and things Darwinian... death itself... which is going to happen anyway... what justifies rushing it?

They're in their 50's now... and I still remind them... and they still surprise me.

When I see I'm being directed to "X," I immediately try to find a different link. I give emerald-boy nothing, especially my time for reading.
