Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

An Alabama mother who survived the brutal New Orleans terror attack on New Year's Day battled her employer, Amazon, for a leave of absence from her warehouse job but faced refusal at first. The young woman found herself amid chaos on Bourbon Street where she got caught under an assailant's vehicle and shot in the foot, which ended up with multiple fractures and a retained bullet. Amazon later made a U-turn after public outcry, extending paid time off to 23-year-old Alexis Scott-Windham as she recovers.

... and Amazon wonders why there is an effort to unionize Amazon workers.

I wonder what Pres-elect Trump has to say about his billionaire friend(s) apparently abusing workers in such a manner?

Amazon should have fired her.

Giving her time off is what socialists do.

Capitalism has no time for your personal problems.

Profit above all else is the American way.

Something I have seen and have noted previously here on this most august site...

As I am driving down a road, and there is a delivery truck sitting on a drivieway to that road and waiting to get back on the road, I've notice different things happening, apparently depending upon the purpose of that delivery truck.

If it is a UPS or FedEx truck, the driver seems to wait until I pass before they pull out on to the road. (I see them pull out in rear view mirror)

If it is an Amazon delivery truck, the driver seems to ~cut it close~ and pull out in front of me, causing me to hit the brakes to avoid an accident.

Are the Amazon drivers under such a pressure to deliver more packages that they seem to drive in such a manner?

I believe so.

Not sure what the latest is, but I had read Amazon drivers relieve themselves while driving in order to stay on schedule.

Capitalism demands it.

Amazon Drivers Are Still Peeing in Bottles (2022)
www.vice.com

Peeing in bottles is still better than what poultry workers have to go through.

Why Are Chicken Plant Workers Forced To Wear Diapers On The Job?
According to Vice News, Oxfam conducted three years worth of research at Tyson Foods, Perdue Farms, Sanderson Farms, and Pilgrim's Pride, including conducting hundreds of interviews. They found that the pressure of keeping up with the speed of the production line was so great that workers taken to wearing Pampers instead of trying to go to the bathroom. In many cases, workers could only go to the bathroom during a half-hour lunch break, a feat made impossible by the fact that they would have to take off their uniforms, eat lunch, wait in line for the bathroom, and then go back to work, all in that short period of time.

It is worse ...

Amazon drivers in LA say there's rarely time to use a bathroom. Their solution? Peeing in a bottle (November 2024)
laist.com

... Why you can sometimes see them on the street

Some drivers throw the bottles in a trashcan after their shift, but others will dump them around the warehouse.

In Atwater Village alone, LAist found 11 bottles across three separate visits on Oct. 3, Oct. 8, and Nov. 14 in the immediate vicinity -- along San Fernando Road between the Colorado Street freeway exit and Sequoia Street. ...

Yup.

And now, is there really any question why Pres-elect trump's TechBros are sparking a resurgence of unions?

The supposedly pro-worker Trump administration.

Can you say, "contradiction?"

I knew you could.

A tune that just appeared on a playlist here ...

Chameleons - Swamp Thing (1986)
www.youtube.com

Lyrics excerpt ...

genius.com

...
I can already hear your tune
Calling me across the room
When the world and his wife are on my back again
Not enough pleasure, too much pain

...

And then the King of Spivs will come
Selling blood by the litre
When nothing's sacred anymore
When the demon's knocking on your door
You'll still be staring down at the floor
...

OK, I had to look up King of Spivs ...

Spiv
en.wikipedia.org

... In the United Kingdom, a spiv is a petty criminal who deals in illicit, typically black market, goods. Spivs were particularly active during the Second World War and in the post-war period when many goods were rationed due to shortages.

According to Peter Wollen, "the crucial difference between the spiv and the classic Hollywood gangster was the degree of sympathy the spiv gained as an intermediary in the transfer of black market goods to ... a grateful mass of consumers."[1] ...

So the king of Spivs might be Pres-elect Trump?

(asking for a friend)

Another tune I heard on college radio ...

Nina Gordon - Tonight and the Rest of My Life (2000)
www.youtube.com

Lyrics excerpt ...

genius.com

...
[Verse 1]
Down to the earth
I fell with dripping wings
Heavy things won't fly
And the sky might catch on fire
And burn the axis of the world
That's why I prefer a sunless sky
To the glittering and stinging in my eyes

[Chorus]
I feel so light
This is all I wanna feel tonight
I feel so light
Tonight and the rest of my life
Tonight and the rest of my life

[Verse 2]
Gleaming in the dark sea
I'm as light as air floating there breathlessly
When the dream dissolves
I open up my eyes
I realize that everything is shoreless sea
A weightlessness is passing over me

[Chorus]
I feel so light
This is all I wanna feel tonight
I feel so light
Tonight and the rest of my life
Tonight and the rest of my life
...
